JUNGLE is the latest jungle adventure flick following from the likes of THE LOST CITY OF Z and RESCUE DAWN. Once again it's based on a true story, with a hiking trip in Bolivia going awry when the members end up falling out and splitting up and a mishap down the rapids causes one of them to go it alone against an increasingly hostile wilderness. It's a showcase for the acting talents of Daniel Radcliffe and he tackles the part with enthusiasm, although it has to be said that this is quite a familiar story by now and in many ways inferior to more profound work, like the Herzog movie. For example, the reliance on flashbacks in the second half smacks of padding. Still, Aussie director Greg McLean, of WOLF CREEK fame, brings some of his trademark grue to the tale, and it's enough to keep you watching.

A familiar story
annoying friends
After three years in the Israeli army, Yossi Ghinsberg (Daniel Radcliffe) wants adventure and ends up in Bolivia. He befriends Swiss school teacher Marcus Stamm and American photographer Kevin Gale. The trio follows mysterious stranger Karl Ruprechter into the jungle to find a lost tribe.
Other than Radcliffe, I don't like any of the character. In fact, I find them and their arguments tiresome. It's more interesting when he's alone. There are some scary body horrors. Radcliffe is great but it insists on going back to Kevin. Sure, his relentlessness helps in the end but he's still annoying. I'd rather have a solo Yossi movie and a shorter movie as well.
Heading for trouble
Jungle is a survival story starring Daniel Radcliffe who lost weight to show his characters emaciated state.
Based on a true story, Radcliffe plays Israeli Yossi Ghinsberg who went trekking in the Bolivian jungle with three other friends in 1981. They hook up with an Austrian adventurer called Karl, who suggests to them a trip into the Amazon jungle to search for a lost Indian tribe and some gold.
Soon after the foursome set off there is some bickering with Karl. Yossi and Kevin part from the other two. However with heavy rainfall their raft capsizes and Yossi gets lost in the rapids.
Yossi needs to survive in the jungle and hopes that he gets rescued. He is battered, bruised, has to avoids snakes, other animals and has creepy crawlies in his body.
He is constantly left in a hallucinatory state, as the days go on Yossi is clinging to his faith.
This is Radcliffe's film, it is rather slow to get going and the other characters in the film are rather sketchy. By the end you can see Radcliffe has had a grim time.
