A mystery Hitchcock might have made if he lived in Japan

In December 1957 a young woman marries an enigmatic man ten years or so her senior. He has a good job that will keep him on the road now and again. A week leaving on a trip that followed their honeymoon, the young woman finds her husband has gone missing. After four days of waiting she heads off to to the town where her husband was last seen. In doing so she sets in motion events a revelations that are best left in the dark.

The film is very much the sort of thing that Hitchcock might have done during the late 50's or ear;y 60's. Its also a story that is very much rooted in the period that it takes place- Japan in the decade or so after the war- its the time when the Japan of the old was giving way to a new Japan.. Even though they explain everything you need to know it helps if you know a little bit more.

The mystery that is the main thrust of the film is pretty good. It is for the most part solid entertainment. However the pacing of events is such that the film seems not to be going anywhere for a portion of the early part of the running time. You're carried away with the style of the filmmaking, but at the same time I reached a point where I looked at my watch to wonder how much more was left since not a whole hell of a lot was revealed.

I like the film but I didn't love it. I think if it had moved just a little bit faster I would have liked it more.

A remake of a film from the early 60's I would be very curious to see how the original plays out.
