I stumbled upon the 1998 Hong Kong romantic comedy "Mui tin oi nei 8 siu si" (aka "Your Place or Mine!") here in 2022. Oddly enough then I had actually never heard about this movie from writer and director James Yuen, but of course with it being a Hong Kong movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I had to watch it.
And I must admit that with the likes of Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and Alex Fong on the cast list, then I was having some expectations to this 1998 movie. However, "Mui tin oi nei 8 siu si" turned out to be a rather generic and stereotypical romantic comedy, one that is very archetypical for the late 1990s. For better or worse. A shame really, because writer and director James Yuen just didn't manage to deliver an outstanding or particularly memorable movie here.
The storyline told in "Mui tin oi nei 8 siu si" was just pretty much essentially the same as most other romantic comedies of that age, so you are not in for anything outstanding. But hey, if you enjoy the late 1990s romantic comedies, then "Mui tin oi nei 8 siu si" should be right up your alley.
The acting performances in the movie were fair enough, taking into consideration the limitations imposed by a generic script.
Ultimately, then "Mui tin oi nei 8 siu si" is a movie that I believe I will have completely forgotten about come next week. So yeah, there wasn't much of anything memorable here, aside from the movie having Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and Alex Fong on the cast list.
My rating of "Mui tin oi nei 8 siu si" lands on a very bland five out of ten stars.

Run-of-the-mill late 1990s romantic comedy...
nice fun
A good example of a romantic comedy that's works great in Hong Kong movies, but would be awful as a Hollywood production.
'Your Place or Mine' is charming fun, with an appealing cast including one of my very favorite Asian singer/actors Vivian Hsu. Those she doesn't need to do much besides be adorable, which she does with such ease it's like she's basically playing herself.
Enjoyable fluff that's quite funny and romantic, and might appeal to people who (like me) don't like American romantic comedies.
