Plot summary
Heroes do not exist. David, a young policeman who has recently moved to Madrid, is forced to collaborate with Jorge Elías - an endearing freak and owner of a comic book shop - in order to solve a series of atrocious murders that recreate the secret origins of the classic superheroes. Each grotesque murder is a piece of a jigsaw puzzle that has the streets of Madrid as a backdrop, but whose complete image they are unable to distinguish. Jorge's encyclopedic knowledge about the comic world and the unexpected discovery of David's dark past will be fundamental in helping them solve the enigma hidden behind the awful crimes. The clues will guide them through the Spanish capital, along a labyrinth designed by a disturbed criminal mind and the only person who knows how to find the exit. Will they be able to unravel the tangled mess of clues and win the game against the troubled criminal that tries to manipulate them? They say that, sometimes, it is necessary to put on a suit and get out there to make the world a better place. Maybe this is one of those times.

This Spanish film opens with a young policeman dying while trying to rescue people from a burning building. His father, Cosme who is also a policeman, is a day off retirement when his replacement, Inspector David Valentín calls. Together they attend a strange crime scene; a dead man is found; he is incredibly muscular and his skin is grey. Cosme's son Jorge, a comic fan, sees a crime photo and notes the similarity to the original version of 'The Incredible Hulk'. When a second body is found; this time resembling the first appearance 'Iron Man', Gorge is invited to act as a consultant. David isn't keen but his new boss Norma, who happens to be keen on cosplay, insists. Together the unlikely pair begin following clues that lead to the uncovering of other related crimes... it would appear that somebody sees themselves as a supervillain... will it take a superhero to stop them?
I really enjoyed this film; it started well with superhero-origin based murders that were as twisted as any of the killings in 'Seven'; a film this makes a clear reference to at one point. Somewhat unexpectedly there are also plenty of laugh out loud moments; the first sight of Norma, dressed in a sailor fuku and brightly coloured wig! The characters are a lot of fun; at first it seems to be mocking comic fan Gorge; when we first see him he is walking around the house in his underwear and eating toast his father had thrown in the bin, but as it progresses he is seen to be a rounded character. The cast did an impressive job making characters fairly believable even during more fanciful events. The film has a great look; suitably dark, with muted tones most of the time, contrasting with moments of bright colour in Gorge's comic store and Norma's cosplay costumes. Without going into details I thought the ending was really good; it wasn't how I thought things would go when I started watching. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to fans of serial killer films and fans of superheroes.
