Wickedly wild witchery.......

The Witch starts off comfortably enough with a very Korean domestic teen vibe. I found it a little annoyingly sugary at times and overstated. That said, it does set the scene nicely for the stark contrast, that comes next.

This film is extraordinarily frenetic, action packed and violent. Certainly once it gets started its never ever boring but the mayhem can get a little exhausting at times. Its not one for the faint hearted but if you enjoyed films like the John Wick franchise, you will, I suspect, love this one.

What helps lift The Witch above a lot of other similar films is an intriguing and intricate story and in some cases, genuinely excellent acting.

A worthwhile watch. 7/10.

Engrossing

Another great Korean movie. Impossible to classify, in parts drama, high school, coming of age, comedy, social, horror, thriller and action. Keeps you guessing throughout with a very slow pace for the first hour and a half, but the quality of the production in terms of acting and writing is enough to engross. The ending lets rip with some extraordinary violence and action which is enough to get your heart pumping. It all adds up to a fine little movie overall and I hope that any subsequent films in the series have the same level of quality.

I'm on another level

Ko Ja Yoon (Da-mi Kim) managed to escape from a facility as an eight-year-old girl that was a bloody mess. She is found in a farm field and raised as the child of the farmers, sort of like Superman. Ja Yoon is smart and talented. She enters a Korean talent show where she reveals a magic trick of levitation of the microphone. Not a big deal, but it catches the attention of those we saw in the early scene.

Ko Ja Yoon is not actually a witch but uses it as a nickname. We later discover she is a killing machine genetic experiment and that this is apparently part 1. Interesting if you like watching Uma Thurman as an X-man.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
