Such an amazing, beautiful and complex way of telling a story, of showing emotions, fear, love and that magnificent instinct to stay alive no matter what.
Very few flaws in this one, mostly a perfect ride, with many bumps and quick turns, an idea executed with such skill, you won't believe it till you'll see it. I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what happens next, the element of "new" being always present here, keeping the viewer's interest to the top. Except the ending, which you can anticipate it easily and perhaps dislike an element or two, The Bar is another Spanish thriller masterpiece. Glad I got to put my eye on it.
Thus and furthermore, highly recommended. If you wanna see horror, scares, but presented in a different way, then go for it. You won't jump but surely enough you'll sit quietly in your seat, drawn to it more and more.

Plot summary
On an ordinary day in bustling downtown Madrid, life ticks over as usual, while inside a decrepit and noisy central bar, a motley assortment of common urbanites is killing time indolently, up until a loud gunshot sends chills down the spine. Out of the blue, now a man lies dead in front of the bar in a pool of blood, and then surprisingly, in broad daylight, another death follows. Where did that mysterious lethal bullet come from? Is this an act of terrorism or is there a solitary invisible sniper hidden on a roof? As hysteria prevails and the bodies miraculously vanish into thin air, the perplexed and terrified bar's regulars are bound to turn on each other, paranoid and suspicious of the potential assassin who might be hiding inside the place. Is there indeed a wolf among sheep?

No horror but boy what a rush!
The Bar
It seems like an ordinary day in Madrid as a mixed group of people head to a somewhat rundown bar for breakfast. A man enters, coughing and spluttering, and goes straight to the lavatory; the owner grumbles about non-customers using the facilities. Shortly afterwards everybody's attention turns to the front of the bar; it appears that a man on the pavement outside has been shot! In no time the street is clear of pedestrians. One man leaves the bar and he too is shot. Those inside first think there must be a murderous sniper at work; then somebody suggests that the authorities killed them because there is somebody very dangerous inside... suddenly they all start suspecting each other and tensions rise. As they learn more about their situation tensions rise further and they start to wonder how to ensure their own survival; even if that may involve letting others die.
I had no real idea what to expect from this film and without preconceived ideas I ended up rather enjoying it. It is hard to place in a genre; it uses plenty of horror tropes but also feels more like a thriller at times... it also has a good number of laughs. The characters are an interesting mix and with the exception of Elana none of them have the sort of good looks you'd expect from a Hollywood film which is refreshing as it makes them feel real; the sort of people you might see if you walked into a random bar in the morning. The story is solid with each of the three acts getting tenser as more is revealed, the stakes are raised and they literally go lower and get dirtier. The settings are good; nicely claustrophobic. The cast is solid; each of their characters is equally important to the story... at least as long as they survive. Overall I'd say this was well worth watching; I'd certainly recommend it for those looking for something a little different.
