Dark Superman, and very good at that

Okay this is not faithful to the comics, which "purists" may object to. However as somebody who firmly believes in judging a movie or such on its own merits, I did like this movie. It is too short, and consequently despite the intelligent and well-balanced tone it generally had the script did feel rushed through. However, I liked the dark and even unflinching tone of the story, and the action scenes while violent are compellingly choreographed. The animation is great, very detailed and atmospheric indeed. The characters are well drawn also, though the high cheekbones may take some getting used to. The music is rousing and unpredictably moody and the characters are still interesting, the relationship between Superman/Clark and Lois while different to what one would expect was still convincing. The voice acting was terrific, especially from Adam Baldwin and John DiMaggio, though Anne Heche is lovely and James Marsters is the very meaning of suave as Luther. All in all, very good but not for everybody maybe. 8/10 Bethany Cox

compressed story relatively fine

LexCorp is digging illegally on Project Applecore to uncover an energy source. Instead, they discover an alien ship and Doomsday is unleashed. Superman is in Antarctica with Lois Lane but he still refuses to reveal his secret identity. Superman returns to battle Doomsday in Metropolis to both their deaths. Superman rises from the dead but he's only a clone made by Lex Luthor. The clone's unbalanced morality leads to a fight with the true resurrected Superman.

Lex dismisses Doomsday as an intergalactic soccer hooligan. He's not wrong. He's just a thing that kills Superman. His story isn't laid out. It's an excuse to have Superman die and then resurrected. This TV movie is pushing out a lot of plot points without much drama or emotions. It's fine story-wise and pretty good as far as TV animation goes. It's not that bad.

An animated Superman movie for a more mature audience...

I sat down to watch the 2007 DC animated "Superman/Doomsday" movie in 2019 with my 9 year old son. Turned out that this animated movie wasn't really a kids movie.

While my son quickly lost interest in this particular superman tale, then I must admit that I found it to be a nice approach to the superhero genre. Especially since the genre is generally so über generic and painted black and white, with good vs. evil, and every storyline essentially being the same; the good guys are heavily outmatched and outnumbered, yet still prevail and triumph over the bad guys, every single time.

This also happened here, of course, but the trip from point A to point B wasn't as generic and rosy red as it usually is in a superhero movie. It turned out that this 2007 animated movie was a darker and more mature oriented presentation. Which definitely appealed to me and my usual aversion towards the superhero genre.

While I wasn't initially familiar with the performers by voice alone, I must admit that they had managed to get together a great ensemble of actors and actresses to perform the voices for "Superman/Doomsday", which included the likes of Anne Heche, James Marsters, John DiMaggio and Ray Wise.

As for the art style, well it was sort of a reminiscent step back to the heyday of Superman, when it wasn't all fancy and artsy. For better or worse, this approach in classic art style might not appeal to just everyone. It was for the most part interesting enough, although the drawn cheekbones on Superman made him look like a gaunt mutant.

The dialogue in the animated movie was good, and it really did help that they had good voice actors and actresses to perform the roles and lines.

All in all, then "Superman/Doomsday" was actually rather enjoyable and watchable, and I am rating it six out of ten stars.
