Mediocrity all the way

'Single all the Way' is one of those films that this reviewer really wanted to like. The concept did appeal to me, as did the film's intentions, and as somebody who has a sister in a happy same sex marriage LGBTQ representation in film, television etc is always welcome by me and it is good to see it get more recognition. Regardless of those stating that its increasing inclusion in film etc is forced diversity, which is absolutely not agreed with personally. Was really prepared to like the film.

It was rather saddening to see that 'Single all the Way' didn't live up to full potential and was rather mediocre. Really appreciated what it was trying to do and its good intentions, but it should have been executed a lot better than it was. As far as Christmas films go, 'Single all the Way' is lightyears away from being one of the worst. But for me it was one of the bigger wastes of potential, especially when it was a concept that is so easy to resonate with.

There are good things in 'Single all the Way'. It looks good, slickly filmed and with charming scenery. The music has many moments where it is very infectious and it never feels at odds with what happens tonally and in placement.

Jennifer Coolidge and Kathy Najimy provide lots of zesty support, Coolidge in particular steals the film and it is a role that plays to her strengths.

Was however less taken with the two male leads. Both of them for my tastes came over as bland and their chemistry isn't there, so it was not easy at all to invest properly in what the film was trying to do. Didn't like how the characters in general were written, all of them (especially the gay ones) are written very stereotypically and in a way that is very exaggerated, too simple and over-generalised.

Furthermore, the script goes well overboard on the corn and cheese and the sentiment is also laid on too thick, everything about 'Single all the Way' screams unnecessarily over the top. The story is thin, over-silly and predictable, as well as feeling too manic at times in the pace.

Overall, really wanted to like it much more and am actually feeling very saddened that it didn't work. 4/10.

I wish I had movies like this growing up

What a time for a gay kid to be growing up.

In the 90s growing up I loved Christmas movies and every one was the same straight story. I longed for a movie like this at Christmas.

Love how we can have a cute, whimsical comedy like this with great performances and a lot of love. People complaining about the family need to watch something else- families SHOULD be this supportive and loving and happy.

The leads are good together. Great supporting cast with Kathy Najimy and Jennifer Coolidge in fine form.

Loved Barry Bosworth as the dad.

Yeah it's corny and syrupy but that's what these movies are! Bring on more!
