This is a situational movie. People get into and out of interesting situations and you might be amused by it, feel romantic or feel bad, but this does not define the romantic comedy genre as I see it. You don't watch this movie to feel good about the romantic endeavors that litter your brain but are almost never real, nor do you watch it to laugh at what is going on.
I especially liked the fact that Uma Thruman didn't play the role of the stupid blonde that she got in some of her latest movies and also that the movie tried to capture reality more than fantastic situations that no one can relate to and that always end in happy ending.
Mix Jewishness, visits to the psychologist, divorcées in the fashion business having gay friends and dating younger guys and you get ... New York. :) Well, this is a good movie. A lot of the clichés one would expect in a New Yorkish movie are broken or not existent and the ones that are left are well blended into the plot.
There isn't much to say about the plot that wouldn't spoil it, so I will not say anything. Uma Thurman plays well, Merryl Streep is always a good actress, but in this movie manages not the be annoying as well, which I think is a step up for her. My wife asked me to keep it, so I guess if I enjoyed it and also did she, then it's a winner all around.

Plot summary
In colorful, bustling, modern-day Manhattan, Rafi Gardet, a beautiful 37-year-old photography producer reeling from a recent divorce, meets David Bloomberg, a handsome 23-year-old painter recently out of college. Rafi's therapist, Dr. Lisa Metzger, who is working to help Rafi overcome her fears of intimacy, finds out that Rafi's new lover is--unfortunately for Lisa--her only son, David. Both David and Rafi must contend with their 14-year age gap, vastly-different backgrounds, and the demands of David's traditional mother. Despite their intense attraction, the charmed couple soon realizes that vastly-different ages and backgrounds create much conflict. A Jewish hip-hop lover and closet painter who still lives with his grandparents, David has little in common with Rafi--a non-practicing Catholic from a wealthy, broken family who travels in the sophisticated world of high-end fashion.

NOT a romantic comedy, and a good film
Love is Eternal While It Lasts
In New York, after a troubled process of divorce, the thirty-seven years old Raphael "Rafi" Gardet (Uma Thurman) meets the twenty-three years old Jew David Bloomberg (Bryan Greenberg) in a session of "Blow-up" and they start seeing each other. Rafi tells details of her relationship with David to her psychoanalyst Lisa Metzger (Meryl Streep),who stimulates Rafi to go on and forget the difference of ages. When Lisa finds that David is actually her son, she faces an ethical and personal dilemma.
"Prime" is a delightful and incredibly good romantic comedy. The story is funny, romantic and never corny, having a very decent conclusion, unusual in Hollywood movies of this genre. The cast is amazing: Uma Thurman, shining and gorgeous, shows a great chemistry with Bryan Greenberg. Meryl Streep is an icon and is awesome, as usual, playing a difficult role of mother, friend and professional. I really loved this film, and love is eternal while it lasts. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Terapia do Amor" ("Therapy of Love")
Prime
It should be mentioned that the title's joke is that the lead female character and the young male character's ages are prime numbers: 37 and 23, anyway, I am really glad I tried this film. Basically in Manhattan beautiful thirty seven year old photography producer Raphaelle 'Rafi' Gardet (Uma Thurman) is in the process of settling after her difficult recent divorce, and she is seeing psychoanalyst Dr. Lisa Metzger (Meryl Streep) to overcome intimacy fears. But then she meets handsome twenty three year old recently out of college painter David Bloomberg (Bryan Greenberg),and while Rafi is enjoying every minute of it she worries about the age difference, but her therapist advises she forget about that. So the relationship continues to the point where Rafi is opening up about her sexual experiences with him, but then she mentions something about what he does, and Lisa realises she is talking about her one and only son. Lisa sits back and listens to what her patient has to say about what she has been up to with David, trying not to react to comments about their activity and his penis among other things, and of course Rafi does not catch on when he says he has a therapist for a mother. Of course eventually Lisa reveals the truth to Rafi, and feeling highly embarrassed and humiliated about what she has been talking about to her she leaves ending treatment, but they patch things up. But David goes behind Rafi's back by sleeping with her friend Sue (Mini Anden),and he seeks his own mother's help as both parent and therapist, and she advises he make up with Rafi. When he tries, offering to have a baby with her, she realises love isn't enough for them, and they split up, and even though they see each other a year later, the end sees Rafi and David just smile at each other and part ways. Also starring Jon Abrahams as Morris, Zak Orth as Randall and Annie Parisse as Katherine. Thurman does really well as the middle aged woman having great fun with the younger man, Streep is equally likable as the therapist trying to hold back in the awkward situation, the funniest moments are indeed the therapy sessions sharing detailed sexual escapades and penis stuff right in front of the mother, it is an enjoyable romantic comedy. Uma Thurman was number 95, and Meryl Streep number 58 on The 100 Greatest Movie Stars, and Streep was number 26 on The World's Greatest Actor. Good!
