In the Tradition of 3 Great Sci-fi Classics...

Love is truly one of those rare films that dares to challenge your knowledge of human existence and experience while allowing you to view the effects of long-term isolation. When astronaut Captain Lee Miller is stranded aboard the International Space Station, he must do his best to survive while coping with the effects of being isolated away from people- without any connection to Earth, for he is oblivious to the catastrophe that is underway. When his life support systems begin to dwindle, he tries his best to save the station, but not before finding a strange discovery that will change everything...

Love, directed and written by William Eubank, is a classic. Yes, it may draw various ties to three other classics (2001, Moon and Solaris (the older version)) but the film has its own unique and impressive take on the "space exploration" sub-genre. Gunner Wright gives an astonishing and breath-taking performance as Captain Lee Miller, who may remind you of Sam from Duncan Jones' Moon; when he begins to lose his grip on reality, you can just see his talent. The visual effects are top-notch (even with the low budget),the sets are convincing, and the feeling of dread and loneliness really hits you when you see its effects on Miller.

All in all, Love is a phenomenal film that is a must-see for anyone who loves the sci-fi genre, and anyone who likes to have their mind screwed with.

9/10 Stars***

I almost forgot to mention, read "Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan for a slightly better understanding of the storyline

The look of love

First time director William Eubank made this very low budget feature that stars Gunner Wright as an astronaut stranded on a space station orbiting earth.

The film starts during the American civil war where a soldier discovers something, maybe remnants of a spacecraft. We also have excerpts of various interviews as the film progresses, a device that breaks up the monotony of the sole cast member in the space station.

It is also serves a back-story of an ark that crash landed during the civil war era USA and it seems to have interviewed various people.

The main story though is the astronaut who is left isolated after he loses communication with mission control. It seems some incident has happened on earth and it looks like he is on his own and maybe the only human alive.

The astronaut slowly disintegrates with his lack of contact with another person and left wondering what has happened on earth. He has a yearning to connect, to connect with someone else hence the film title, Love.

The low budget of Love and the fact that he has the solo cast member in space plus a computer voice reminds you of Moon with the space station aesthetics giving you the visual reminder of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Conceptually I was impressed with the film even though the film is rather cloudy and ambiguous and I do not pretend that I understood it all.

What the director has done with the minuscule budget is breathtaking and has to be applauded. Apparently, the space station was constructed in Eubank's parents yard.

No love 4 me

The movie has nothing to do with a 2Pac song whatsoever, but I liked that as a summary line, so I used it. I just read another comment on this and the director seems like a cool guy. Though I never would have thought that he'd be involved with a movie like "House of the Rising sun". But you gotta make money, one way or the other. His intentions are more than noble here and the philosophy behind the film is really cool. I guess if I would compare this to anything, it would be to Kubricks "2001". Both are disguised as Sci-Fi movies, do not have a real story, but rather other intentions behind the concept of the movie.

Of course I'm not saying that the director here is the next Kubrick. Don't try to read too much into that. Though you should try to read quite a lot into the movie. And you'll have enough time to think about everything that is going on. There is really quite a lot of talk! I really thought and tried to love it more, but it's just too damn long for its own good.
