reversed Big

As a child, Jordan Sanders (Marsai Martin) got bullied and vowed to be the boss bullying others. As an adult, she (Regina Hall) is a bullying boss of a tech company declared Atlanta's Tech Empress. Her assistant April Williams (Issa Rae) and her employees all live in fear. Her main customer Connor (Mikey Day) threatens to leave in 48 hours. She picks on the wrong girl who makes a wish turning her back to 13 years old. Her neighbor calls child services and she is forced to go back to school. She is bullied once again and she is relegated to the Friendzone table.

Somewhere around the middle, the movie goes down the less fun road. It's around the public karaoke. The movie needs to be following her mainly in the school. This is an attempt at being the reversed Big. The reason Big and 13 Going on 30 work is that they are fish out of water stories. This could never be completely that but it comes closest with her at the school. In her adult life, there is only one joke where people keep asking who this little girl is. The comedy has nowhere to go with that. In fact, I'd drop the company, the boy toy, and definitely Mikey Day. Mikey Day annoys me. The ticking clock is useful a lot of the times but this premise doesn't require it. Mostly, I like the adorable Friendzone gang. Also Stevie could be at that school. There is no reason why the movie spends the time to introduce that central character and leave her sitting on the bench. Put her into the game. The adult boy toy needs to go especially if the highly inappropriate relationship with teacher Marshall is put up front. I really like some of this but the comedy is uneven. I like most of the characters. It's fine but it could have been great.

The other big

It's been quite a while since I last saw Big with Tom Hanks. So I can't really compare the two movies. They seem to take a similar idea, but to the opposite effect! No pun intended. And therefor I can't say if the Hanks movie feels inapprpriate too at certain moments. Having a little girl flirting with a teacher in a "funny way" feels cringe worthy to say the least.

But all that can be seen in a different light of course, especially if you consider the all around great performances. Especially the already mentioned little girl - she is really good and has charisma and a screen presence! The story overall is predictable even if you haven't seen Big or any other "body swap" comedy. Still this can be enjoyed, even if I almost wish I had as much fun watching this as they had making it (there are multiple scenes, where you can tell the actors are on the verge of losing it - I can only imagine how good the outtakes and the overall mood on the set was)

Lighthearted fun from another time

Each performance in this movie is a winner. The laughs come naturally. 3 black female comic geniuses in one film is a tremendous accomplishment. I don't remember anything like this happening in film history. I think that the main problem was that Marsai Martin, plays an adult to well. Anyone that has seen her on Blackish knows, Diane was born 45 yrs old. In the scenes where she is with other children, there is no sense that she is childlike at all. It is at the Climax, finally, that we see a young girl just having fun. Other than that Little is a great movie for tweens and parents of tweens.
