lose the divorce

After dropping off their daughter Maddie at Decatur University for her senior year, housewife Deanna Miles (Melissa McCarthy) is told by her husband that he's cheating with real estate agent Marcie (Julie Bowen) and wants a divorce. She decides to go back for her last year of university to get her archeology degree which she gave up to have Maddie. At first, Maddie is horrified but then her sorority sisters love the mother student. Helen (Gillian Jacobs) is an older sister who is famous for her eight year coma. She has an unexpected fling with the much younger Jack which thrills her best friend Christine (Maya Rudolph).

The movie starts off on the wrong foot. A divorce really dampens the fun which the movie and Deanna are so desperate to have. It's not necessary as motivation for her and it's not funny. The sad part is that there is a fun movie inside somewhere. I really like the sorority sisters. I like McCarthy with them. Maddie could be played by a better actress and she needs a bigger role. The story is basically "Back to School" and at its best, that's what this could have been. It just needs to lose the divorce and Christine and a few other things.

Decent Vehicle For Melissa McCarthy

As they watch their daughter, Molly Gordon, head off to college, Matt Walsh announces to wife Melissa McCarthy that he wants a divorce and his fiancee, a real estate agent, is selling their home. After Miss Mccarthy has a nervous breakdown, she returns to college -- the one her daughter is at -- to finish her degree.

Comedies about older people returning to comedy have been around a long time; I am very fond of the Bing Crosby vehicle HIGH TIMES, and Rodney Dangerfield had a hit with BACK TO SCHOOL. This movie offers more of the same, for Miss McCarthy, as she pledges a sorority, becomes enormously popular, and has a couple of crises which, we are confident, she will triumph over. It's a rather soft role, with a lot more sentiment than usual for one of her vehicles, and the funniest sequences are those with Maya Rudolph as her best friend. It's no classic, but it's certainly watchable.

Bad school daze

I try to approach a Melissa McCarthy comedy with an open mind. However when you have a film co-written by McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, who also directs his wife. You have to wonder if someone at Warner Brothers had the guts to stand up and say that the script was not good enough for a comedy.

This is a vanity project. McCarthy plays a middle aged mom Deanna, whose husband announces that she wants a divorce. So Deanna goes back to university to finish her archeology degree, the same one that her daughter attends. Deanna attracts derision from some of the younger students but when she loses her frumpy image, she gets the attention of a younger student and she has lots of sex with him.

As a comedy it has few laughs and just one inspired moment in the script when the identity of the student she is having sex with is revealed. Much of the film is horribly tedious and unfunny.

When I watched this my wife turned round to me and asked if I was going to watch the rest of the movie or fall asleep! Take a look at the scene where Denna and her soon to be ex husband have a mediation meeting. It is badly written drivel that is without any humour at all.
