An Inner Voice Problem.

This is an offbeat tale about a Tokyo office worker living a comfortable life as a loaner (she has but one friend) rapidly approaching middle aged senility and her over bearing inner self whom she calls "A" ("A" has a male "voice") with whom she is in constant communication both mentally and physically (she talks to herself a lot)."A" is the cause of her circumstances both in the present and in the past especially regarding romantic matters. From a psychological perspective, "A" is simply jealous of any male that comes into the orbit of the loaner and insures that would be lovers are at most passing fancies. Actress Non (aka Rena Nounen) turns in an outstanding binary performance as a character who is simultaneously attractive (she can be 30-something cute) and repelling (she can totally lack femininity and border on being a 30-something tomboy). Non-san is just plain amazing to watch. The loaner finally starts to hook up seriously with someone a bit younger, and "A" leaves in a huff. A pivotal scene occurs atop the Tokyo Tower after the pair have surmounted over 350 steps to get there (something I have yet to achieve!). (This landmark can be a perfect backdrop for cinematic (and real) romance.) Director Akiko Ôku (who also wrote the script) delivers an enjoyable movie (as usual). Cinematography and lighting are okay except for what looks like a green-screen virtual tour of the usual tourist spots in Rome (the loaner travels there to see an old college acquaintance). Music seems to fit right in. Subtitles are sometimes too busy and disappear too fast. The film ends in a bit of a let down with a major loop left open. Dialog continues into the closing credits. A film worth taking a look at. Viewed at the JICC Virtual Winter Film Fest. WILLIAM FLANIGAN.

Impossible not to adore!

If you are up for something invigorating, refreshing and uplifting... try this! Perfect for anytime!

Akiko Ohku, as a director - you rule with this piece! What a masterpiece... if you can say that for a rom-com and a late coming of age drama (over 30 years old) hybrid!!!

What a screenplay written by Risa Wataya - a surreal kicks of wasabi feelings in your brain were constant reminder of the fragility of the main character - almost like living on the edge!

And acting of Non (previously known as Rena Nounen) just left me speechless. I didn't care what is she involved in the future - I will watch it! That girl has power and has the audience in her palm, holding us tight!

Unexpectedly great film - and nobody is talking about it?! What is wrong with these people?
