Be careful what you summon

Practicing teenage witch Faye (a fine and sympathetic portrayal by Georgina Jane) summons up the evil demon Cupid (Bao Tieu sporting funky make-up) to exact a harsh revenge on the mean girls at school who played a cruel prank on her.

Writer/director Scott Jeffrey relates the enjoyable and engrossing story at a constant pace, takes time to develop the characters, ably crafts a creepy atmosphere, generates a good deal of tension, stages the brutal kills with savage gusto, and delivers several cool bits of nasty gore. Moreover, Cupid makes for a really gnarly beast while Cupid's dark origins prove to be quite interesting. The solid acting from a capable cast keeps this movie humming: Michael Owusu as charming and hunky teacher Duncan Jones, Abi Casson Thompson as the sweet Helen Drake, Ali Barouti as the smitten Matt, Sarah T. Cohen as the snarky Elise, and Adrian Bauchet as the irate Principal Harper. A neat little fright flick.

As cheap as it gets

CUPID (2020) is another micro-budgeted supernatural horror that's really not worth seeking out even if you're addicted to the genre (like me). It's a high school story that tells of a bullied girl who decides to get revenge on her teenage tormentors by summoning the spirit of the evil Cupid, who goes on a supernatural killing spree with the aid of his bow and arrow. Alternatively hackneyed and silly when it comes to the plotting, the only novelty being the idea of a killer Cupid, a far cry from the cherubic stereotype that we all know and think of when we hear of him. Sadly the ultra low budget means that we're treated to the usual stilted acting and dire dialogue, while the gory deaths become repetitive early on. Another Amazon Prime special that I'm glad I didn't pay for.

Love Kills

The film opens with "the real story behind the legend" whatever that means. We find out that Cupid (Bao Tieu) is a murdering demon who hates love and can be summoned to kill those who abuse love. In high school, it is Faye (Georgina Jane) vs the mean girls and you can guess the rest.

The girls did wear school uniforms. The arrow managed to hit the eye a lot. I didn't feel any terror and this felt like another high school killer film. I didn't care for the protagonist. Mean girl Elise (Sarah T. Cohen) had all the best lines and I liked her in spite of being the bad girl.

Guide: F-word. Brief sex. No nudity.
