Unfairly Panned, Misunderstood, Little Horror Gem

An incredibly misunderstood horror film, Book of Shadows is a taut, suspenseful, and well acted psychological thriller- that doesn't rely on gimmicks or cliches (old or new) to entertain and fright its audience. To start with the flaws of this film, the thing that sticks out most to me is the editing. Things don't seem to have a clear map of how they are being told at times, which was mainly due to studio interference unfortunately, as they thought it would appeal better to audiences. Instead, the film loses its charm and suspense a bit in the process, which is a flaw even the director himself has recognized, and was deeply irritated the studio forced upon his film. The music in the film also seems kinda out of place, also do to the studio involvement I am guessing, to appeal to target audiences I suppose, but seriously, trashy grunge rock does not belong in a Blair Witch movie. As for the positive things about this film, here are my thoughts. This film is certainly not a disaster, as it was claimed back when it was released, and still is often enough now. This film is very well thought out, very complex, and it kept me entertained all throughout. It feels a lot more down to earth than the previous film, not showy, or forced in any sort of way. Its story is unnerving, and its performances are very well done, especially lead actor Jeffrey Donovan. I was truly invested in what was happening on screen, I was never bored, in total, I liked it better than the original. It also has an interesting social commentary component to it as well, as well as many twists and turns that will keep you guessing till the very end. In the end, I enjoyed the hell out of this film, and i'm not afraid to admit it. It's a shame the film doesn't receive the credit it deserves, as well as the studio interference it clearly didn't need. Hear me out on this one, give it a try sometime. My Rating: 8.5/10

The Most Underrated Horror Movie of all Time

Okay...I get that people didn't like this movie when it came out, but the IMDB rating to this is way lower than it should be. I think why people don't like it is because it was a huge step away from the first film and that it wasn't a found film footage. I don't even know where else they could have gone with it that would have been praised by the fans.

What we have here is a completely underrated movie. I get that people didn't understand it, that it's confusing, but I think that was the point. The filmmakers wanted to you to feel like the main cast. Another great thing is that it MESSES with your mind in ways that few movies can. To top it off the score to this movie is atmospheric nightmare-ish that really brings out the creepy factor in this film.

Just go in with an open mind. Don't think about it being a Blair Witch sequel, think of it as a mind bender. It leaves you with questions, and people don't like that, but that just means you can have your own theory as to what happened. Very few movies allow this, and the few movies that do don't do it as well as this one.

I love this movie and I hope one day they will release it on Blu-Ray.

Not what I was expecting...in the best way.

It's disappointing to see that this film has been hit with such a low rating, because I for one thought it was a pretty good flick.

I was curious to see how the makers of the original film would go about creating the sequel, and I had the idea that they'd just totally cash in on BWP and make a movie solely about the Blair Witch with fancy special effects and lots of blood and guts, requiring the viewer to simply kick back and not think. You know, like so many other Hollywood movies these days that milk a concept for all it's worth at the expense of the story. Thankfully, the makers didn't take this route.

Book of Shadows doesn't rely on blood and gore, nor special effects. There is little in the way of jump-in-your-seat-frights, if any, but that's not a bad thing. It contains a pretty decent story, which at times, is quite chilling. The acting was fairly good as well, except the guy who played the sheriff. I felt he went just a little over the top..

If you haven't seen it, and are wary about it, take a chance and do so. Not exactly a 'sequel' in the traditional sense and more of a stand alone film (though I recommend seeing the first film beforehand),you can't go wrong. Good movie!
