Absolutely amazing!

This 1985 Anne of Green Gables has always been one of my all-time favourites. I love the book also, and while I am the kind of person who watches an adaptation on its own merits while sometimes suggesting what could have been done instead, I found this adaptation to be true in detail and spirit to the book. The adaptation looks beautiful, lush scenery, beautiful but never idealistic costumes and photography are definite things to like, as well as the charming lilting score. The script has its fair share of droll and heart-warming moments, and the story is still the one I know and love, timeless, thought-provoking and simply beautiful. The pacing I found perfect, I personally never found it flat, then again I was so entranced in everything else I would have overlooked it. The acting I can't fault, Megan Follows is a wonderful actress and her Anne is always likable. Jonathan Crombie also embodies the role of Gilbert, Collette Dewhurst's performance is a perfect blend of hard and soft and Richard Farnsworth is a charming Matthew. In conclusion, amazing, was a favourite, still is and always will be. 10/10 Bethany Cox

great TV

Anne Shirley (Megan Follows) is a precocious overly-dramatic talkative 13 year old orphan forever struggling under servitude of others. She loves books. Elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and kindly Matthew Cuthbert (Richard Farnsworth),want a young boy to help the farm. They are surprised to find Anne Shirley waiting at the train station. Eventually Marilla relents to let her stay. She befriends Diana Barry and has a combative relationship with Gilbert Blythe.

This is a great TV mini-series. The first hour has the trio of Follows, Dewhurst and Farnsworth. Farnsworth is almost silent but has such a great presence. Dewhurst is absolutely brilliant and Follows creates the new standard for Anne Shirley. Then Anne has a new trio with Diana and Gilbert. It's a series of fun hap-hazard teen misadventures and a sweet coming-of-age story.

Anne of Green Gables-Precocious, Obnoxious & Wonderful ****

Megan Follows gives a superb performance in the title role. She is ably supported by Colleen Dewhurst, who once again proves what an under-rated actress she was.

Miss Follows is simply perfect as the orphaned Anne, a free spirit with tremendous intelligence and understanding of life, way beyond her age. Of course, there are comic overtones here as Anne gets into one predicament after another. She almost reminds me of a character in Roz Russell's "The Trouble With Angels."

The movie really depicts middle-aged women as cruel, uncaring individuals.

While he may have been miscast, Richard Farnsworth gives a somber performance as the low-key brother of Dewhurst, whose kindness is forever remembered.

The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

Megan Follows gets it so right as she matures into a beautifully played woman.

The story is so good because it depicts how a girl can overcome adversity. Anne was brilliant from day one, she has such instinct, ambition, and time after time, she certainly proves her mettle to overcome the misfortunes in life.
