Generally generic

WISH UPON is yet another high school horror flick with an entirely predictable storyline that you'll have seen play out a million times before in a million similar ways. A typical mildly obnoxious protagonist - who has no likeable element to her personality whatsoever - comes into possession of an ancient magical device which will grant her seven wishes. They do come true, but with macabre results. This is the kind of teen friendly fare that I generally dislike watching, with cheesy death scenes that feel like weak imitations of the ones in the FINAL DESTINATION franchise and a general generic and predictable feel. I was amused to see Ryan Philippe looking middle aged and playing the protagonist's father.

clueless and shallow

Clare Shannon (Joey King) is still haunted by memories of witnessing her mother's suicide. She is embarrassed by her dumpster-diving drunk hoarder father (Ryan Phillippe) and picked on by fellow student Darcie. She gets into a fist fight with Darcie. Her father brings her a mysterious Chinese music box from the dumpster. She wishes for Darcie to rot. The box opens and Darcie wakes up with necrotizing fasciitis. She then finds her beloved dog Max dead. She makes another wish for hunky Paul to fall in love with her. Next, her rich uncle dies in a weird bathroom accident. She wishes for the inheritance and he leaves her his entire estate. Then her lovely neighbor dies in a freak accident. Her classmate Ryan Hui and his cousin Gina helps translate the inscriptions on the box revealing seven wishes granted.

I want to like Clare at the beginning. As the story unfolds, she gets more shallow and stupider. Clueless and shallow is survivable for a little while but it gets rather annoying. She shows a callousness to Darcie although her friends are even worst. It takes too long for her to add two and two together. In general, her wishing is too careless. It's like she has never paid attention to any genie story. She's a frustrating character. As a horror, there is one minor scary buildup but generally nothing actually scary. It's all very disappointing.

The funniest film I have ever ever seen

There are so many moments, so many lines, scenes, deaths and editing issues in this film that it is unbelievably funny. I have watched scenes in this film multiple times because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The characters don't communicate like humans, the person who wrote this clearly has no understanding of how young people actually are and how they behave. Every teenager in this film has a massive font on their phone like they're 80 years old. There's a scene in a cafeteria where they trade hilariously inept insults. It is genuinely amazing.

I am writing a seperate paragraph just for the ending because oh my, it is the best ending I've ever seen. I've seen The Room, Birdemic, Troll 2, Vampires Kiss, you name it, I've seen it. But this is easily the funniest ending I have ever ever seen. It's so bad, so nonsensical, so inept and so unaware that it is so bad that I ended up watching it a further 10 times at least. I couldn't sleep for a good hour or two because I was laughing and crying so hard. Watch this movie. It's too good to be missed.
