Lukewarm retread of the original

The success of the original WILD THINGS (a great little film, by the way, and well worth tracking down) led producers to demanding a second helping of the pie, so along comes this sequel (and a further two down the line, so somebody somewhere must like them). Sadly, WILD THINGS 2 turns out to be a lukewarm retread of the original, down to using almost exactly the same plot except with the character names changed.

Unfortunately, the thing that helped WILD THINGS to achieve its success was the novelty: it stands alone as a uniquely thrilling compendium of twists upon twists, manipulating the story constantly to keep the viewer guessing. We've already seen and dealt with all that by the time of WILD THINGS 2, and it all feels very passé as a result.

It doesn't help that this straight-to-video outing lacks any decent cast members (and low rent action star Linden Ashby playing a cop doesn't count) and as a result the acting is pretty poor. I didn't care about what happened to any of those involved, and it all felt very stale and predictable. The characters are drab and the presence of not one, not two, but three scriptwriters should be warning enough: stick with the original!

Not so wild

Watch the original Wild Things before you even think about watching this. I'm saying this, because a) this is just a re-hash of the original and therefor b) will spoil all the fun you could have with the original movie. Why? Because the acting the script, actually everything is better with the first one.

It's obvious that this is just a direct-to-video cash-in. You could wonder what the point is, when the original was great as it was. But of course, if something is successful, they will remake it .. and in this case, just call it "part 2", which is a "cheat" in itself. As are quite a few things in the movie. And while you didn't care about the cheats that much in the first one (because it was good),you will not be able to watch this completely and enjoy it as a movie (depending on your likings, you might enjoy the "bodys" on display here ... though there are better and shorter music videos for that sort of thing)

Wild Things Too.

Wild Things 2 isn't a sequel; it's a cheap emulation, an imperfect carbon-copy that takes nearly all of the elements from the first film and simply replays them with a slightly modified script and a different (ie., less memorable) cast. As in the original, the noir-style plot revolves around a group of morally bankrupt characters out to get rich any way they can, meaning that double-crosses, murder, and sex are once again the order of the day, all of which leaves the viewer with a very strong feeling of deja-vu.

Bisexual rich girl/poor girl combo: it's there! Gratuitous threesome scene: it's there! Sexy pool scene: it's there! Inquisitive detective: he's there! Further plot explanations during the end credits: you guessed it... it's all bloody there, with zero effort made to add anything new. The no-name cast do their best with the regurgitated material, and the girls are plenty hot enough to make matters easy to endure, but at the end of the day, this is nothing more than an unimaginative cash-in that really didn't need to be made.

5/10 for all the lesbian snogging and boobs and stuff, but that's being generous.
