Ciao Boy!

OH. MY. GOD. Where did they find this guy, Mino Sferra? He plays (or attempts to play) the father in the film but his acting is beyond atrocious. I don't think I've ever watched a film where an actor's performance is so bad and distracting - EVER! For one, his heavy Italian accent coupled with his monotone delivery of the dialogue makes for a strange pairing. Sure, the dialogue is horrible all on its own--there's a point early in the film where the son rides a Vespa through the Italian countryside and says "Ciao Boy!" to a local kid as he whizzes by. Really? Well, ciao, which could mean both hello and bye, is at least very fitting to sum up this film as the director and writers obviously didn't know whether they were coming or going with this mess.

Back to Sferra: most of the time I couldn't understand any of what he says with that heavy and labored pronunciation of English. Matter fact, most of the Italian cast made Sam Gittins, who did a decent-but-far-from-Oscar-worthy job playing the son, look like the second coming of Laurence Olivier.

My recommendation: Pass.

Nifty sci-fi flick

Young London scientist Ricky Farina (a fine and likeable performance by Sam Gittins) participates in time travel experiments with his father Riccardo (a lively and engaging portrayal by Mino Sferra) in Italy. Naturally, said time travel experiments go awry resulting in time loops.

Writer/director Ciro Sorrentino relates the engrossing story at a brisk pace, takes time to develop the characters, makes nice use of the beautiful Italian countryside, and presents some interesting complications with the various time loops. The solid acting from the capable cast keeps this movie humming: Ellie Poussot as the meddlesome Celestine, Eliana Manvati as the sweet Olivia, and Michelangelo Gentile as the amiable Mario. A cool little movie.

You created a paradox

Ricky (Sam Gittins) and Riccardo (Mino Sferra) are not from Cuba but are in Italy. In an old concrete building, they create a time machine and another low budget film. They use it and create a paradox and do the old watching themselves bit as being their future is part of their past. Ho-hum. We see Ricky drive a Vesper several times and tries not to be seen by himself. Not as good as Primer.

Guide: no sex or nudity. almost says the F word.
