I liked it. The casting was good, characters too. The filming location was very creepy. It had some jumpscares. The kills were fine. The reason why it was scary a lot, it's because it was based on real event. I think the only silly part of the movie, was the ending scene.

It's not like the first movie
Entirely routine
PREY AT NIGHT is the second in the STRANGERS series; I hated the first movie so wasn't expecting much from this one. I didn't get it, either. This is a film which simply relocates the action of the first to a trailer park, where an uninteresting family of characters - none of whom you feel any sympathy for, due to their stupidity - are menaced by the least menacing characters ever. The killers feel like they're from one of the PURGE movies but less menacing, while the director couldn't be more disinterested in his material. This is the kind of film which offers a wealth of on-screen action in the form of kills and stalk-and-slash sequences, but nothing in the way of atmosphere, suspense, or indeed fear. It's entirely boring, and routine, as a result.
stripped-down horror
Cindy (Christina Hendricks) and Mike (Martin Henderson) have had a tough year with their rebellious daughter Kinsey (Bailee Madison). Their son Luke (Lewis Pullman) is college age. They are taking a road trip to uncle Marv's trailer park. The community seems to be deserted and Cindy finds a note from uncle Marv. The family settles into their trailer. A girl knocks on the door and asks for Tamara.
This horror franchise traffics in a stripped-down B-horror construction. There are no reasons and there is little setup. It could be an interesting concept but it still hasn't really hooked me. When a horror is this stripped down, every little problem is that much more noticeable. The first problem is Bailee Madison. At no point do I believe that she is a problem child. From her public persona, she wouldn't know how to be a bad girl. It's all pretend and it feels wrong. At one point, Luke calls her out for not smoking properly. It's a bit of meta burn like the script is saying she's wrong for the role. With so little back story, any little thing that rings wrong really rings wrong. After that, there are various problematic horror tropes. As always, they split up for no good reason. They should simply go get their car and drive. I do like the cell phones solution but I would also extend that solution to their vehicle. I am leery of the gun which gives Mike too much power in a horror movie. I was hoping that the bullets have been replaced with blanks or the gun would explode upon firing. It needs a twist. There are too many instances where the killers should be spotted in the background but the characters apparently have no peripheral vision. It's a little annoying that the killers could throw something at the windshield which immediately causes the car to crash. The place is mostly open fields and empty roads. It's one trope that I don't like. As a no fuss B-horror, this is fine but even at such a short running time, I find myself itching for it to end.
