One old reprobate

Producing as well as starring in The Old Man & The Gun, Robert Redford is going out in grand style as one reprobate of a senior citizen. It's the equivalent of what John Wayne did in The Shootist or Clark Gable with The Misfits.

Based on a true story, Redford has never been a solid citizen since he was in puberty. Set in 1981, Redford has been a habitual criminal, his kind are the kind that three strike felony laws for. Not that prison ever bothered him. Since fleeing a juvenile detention facility at 13 he's escaped from prisons 18 times, be they county lockups or big time prisons like San Quentin.

At the moment Redford is involved with both Danny Glover and Tom Waits in a trio of senior citizen robberies. These guys are successful because they are so disarming no one suspects. Until a pattern is put together and its discovered by Casey Affleck they are not on any law enforcement radar.

Affleck plays Pat Garrett to Redford's Billy The Kid. He's one relentless lawman determined to bring in this crowd who are giving old folks a bad name.

A little romantic interlude is given Redford when in eluding the law he meets Sissy Spacek. These two have a nice easy charm and their scenes are really special. I'm betting Sissy took the part because the film is shot and the plot is set in Texas where she resides.

The plain truth is that Redford likes being a criminal as long as he has his health. And you see that he will never change.

Redford if he does retire from acting will go out on a winner with The Old Man & The Gun.

Passes the time

THE OLD MAN & THE GUN is a light and mildly entertaining true life story about an old-timer who robbed a series of banks, as well as staging a series of jailbreaks, throughout the latter half of the 20th century. It's essentially a showcase for a spirited Robert Redford, who delivers a layered and assured performance even at his advanced age, although I prefer him in more challenging material like ALL IS LOST. Still, this is amusing enough, with some nice appearances from other old-timers like Sissy Spacek and Danny Glover, and it passes the time amiably enough.

Subtitles for the UK please

Despite having my hearing aids on I found a lot of the dialogue mumbled and unintelligible. When there ain't any dialogue very little happened.Lots of totally pointless and meandering scenes. It is difficult to understand how a film which lasts just over 90 minutes can seem to be so achingly slow.Let's hope this is Red ford's last film.
