I was all ready to give this moving film a 7 and then...
Sensibilities of the 1990s, in 2019?
Okay, this was predictable, standard fare of underprivileged black kids, with a white side kick, learning to follow through, while in the hands of a kid trying to prove herself in the shadow of a great father.
But, it is based on a real team and real people.
The kid living in her father's shadow trying to prove herself in sports is a woman, not a man and she is a black adopted child of white parents.
Had these two things been dealt with more appropriately, this could have been far, far more interesting.
As stands, it is still a feel good movie for the underdogs finding their way, but it is lightweight in its delivery, which falls on the Director and the script. The actors were as solid as they could be with such a lack-luster, predictable, dated script and inexperienced Director.
The most amazing thing about the film, stuck in the time warp of Lean on Me, Coach Carter, The Substitute and other 90sish films, is the fact that apparently Tika Sumpter has no plans for aging! Go Tika!
Not horrible, and kids still need after school specials that inspire good behavior.
Ugh!
So this piece of garbage scored better than Star Wars, Raiders of the lost Ark, The Great Escape and Jaws? Stop padding reviews by giving 10's (oops...that would require honesty.)
