Don't Believe the Haters

Thoroughly enjoyable. The High Note is really great old fashioned movie watching - wonderful cast, excellent chemistry, great music. They haven't reinvented the wheel here but it's mightily entertaining, a wonderful feel-good movie.

I'm a producer

Maggie (Dakota Johnson) works as a personal assistant to iconic singer Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross). She wants to produce and has a different idea where Grace should take her career than everyone else. Meanwhile, she was met another singer (Kelvin Harrison jr.) who allows her to produce his records. Conflicts occur.

This was a decent feel good story about a cut throat industry.

Guide 1 F-word. No sex or nudity.

It's fine

Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross) is a singing icon and a diva. Maggie Sherwoode (Dakota Johnson) has been her loyal personal assistant for the last three years. While Maggie believes that Grace should make a new album, Grace's longtime manager Jack Robertson (Ice Cube) pushes for a lucrative Vegas residency. Gail (June Diane Raphael) is the drunken hanger on. Katie (Zoe Chao) is Maggie's best friend roommate. Maggie encounters singer David Cliff (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) at a grocery store and suggests being his producer.

It's a nice music industry story from the 90's if it happens in the present day. It cast a wide net on a lot of the standard tropes but they are mostly very thin until a shocking reveal at the end. More about that later. The fact is that these are all nice characters. They are all very nice and this is perfectly nice movie. It's nice.

The best is Zoe Chao. I've seen her in quite a few things lately. She has nailed the sassy best friend character. After looking through the deleted scenes, it seems that they decided to cut out the wackiest takes and Katie became the main comedic outlet. Gail has a lot cut out. There is a deliberate aim to smooth out the film. It becomes perfectly fine but unremarkable.

Finally, David walking out of the record release party only makes sense after the reveal. There is a real WTF moment when that happens. I would rework a lot of his dialogue to hint at the reveal without showing it. At least, he needs to sound like a babbling idiot. There is a reason at that moment for him to not make any sense and he needs to over-react out of all proportion. He needs to go nuclear at that moment and it's not about her lying to him with being a producer. Someone needs to sit down and think about what David is assuming at that moment. All in all, this movie is fine. The characters are fine. It's fine.
