Imagine Steven Seagal's body-double is offered his own action movie... a low-budget "Die Hard" clone. Then imagine that Seagal needs his body double on a shoot in Kyrgyzstan, so they have to re-cast the film at the last minute. The only person available is Ruby Rose, a second-rate Angelina Jolie, with no discernable acting talent. Then imagine Jean Reno has run out of money... and takes this clichéd bad-guy role to pay off his debts to Luc Besson. That's "The Doorman".

Steven Seagal's body double turned this movie down...
Die Hard at the hotel
THE DOORMAN is a Romanian-made DIE HARD rip-off set in an empty hotel rather than a tower block, but the two plots are much the same. This cheapie is much the inferior movie despite being directed by Japanese maverick Ryuhei Kitamura, who once made such fresh and frenetic films as VERSUS and AZUMI. Sadly those days seem long in the past when compared to this cliched mess of a film which does have a handful of heavily stylised fight sequences, but they're spoilt by poor editing, indifferent choreography, and a protagonist in the form of Ruby Rose who gets doubled more than Steven Seagal in one of his latter-day films. Why cast someone like this as a fighter when it's clear they can only do very basic moves? The main reason to tune in is the cast, with the dream triumvirate of Louis Mandylor, Jean Reno and Aksel Hennie playing the baddies, but even they have very little to do.
Did you kill anyone?
This is a "Die Hard" type of film with Ruby Rose is the title role. As a Gunnery Sergeant guarding our ambassador in Romania she manages to shoot and kill everyone except the guy with the bazooka. Back in NYC she works as a doorman, a job her uncle got her. At 20 minutes into the film after all the good guy introductions things take a turn and then Jean Reno shows up. Ruby has to fight to stay alive and keep the remnants of her family alive.
It is a very predictable film. While Ruby Rose is a trained boxer, we really don't see those skills. I thought it was a "fun" no thinking action film.
Guide: Didn't catch any F words. Brief male butt nudity.
