Breaking point survival

'The Domestics' was another idea that sounded very interesting and creative, so there was enough to make one want to see it. The cover looked quite eerie. So saw 'The Domestics' with genuine interest and wanting to at least sort of like it even if it had many problems.

Seeing it, well 'The Domestics' certainly did have many problems and it is pretty much exactly the same feelings had when watching a few other films recently. It has its moments and good points certainly, but just underwhelmed even having prepared myself to not expect an awful lot. Not a terrible film or without redeeming qualities, and there is far worse out there of the genre and overall. Liked the concept for 'The Domestics' somewhat, the execution was generally lacking.

Personally, 'The Domestics' at least didn't insult my intelligence. It at least didn't make me angry watching it. Despite giving it a relatively low score and negative review, it even didn't make me regret watching it altogether, there are imminently worse films out there.

It starts off quite well and there are a few sporadic unsettling touches.

Did think it didn't look too bad for a film not made on a high budget and the music set the tone reasonably well.

However, the acting is not very good to put it lightly, Kate Bosworth is really quite awful and her chemistry with the not much better lead actor is non-existent in a film full of bland chemistry. The characters are not easy at all to endear to with some irrational ways of thinking going on. The script is very stilted on the most part, while the ridiculousness goes well overboard a lot of the time that it becomes tiresomely dumb and the elements intended to be creepy were spoiled by random gratuity and predictability and bordered on being uncomfortably weird in an excessive sense.

Tension and suspense is next to none after a promising start, the latter stages become very vague and lack explanation and there are parts that come out of nowhere and add absolutely nothing. Also found the characters very annoying and their decision making frustrating and senseless, have been mentioning this a lot in film reviews recently but it has become a bugbear and seen so many times. Considering the premise, the unsettlement and tension should have been so much more, didn't get anywhere near as much an uncompromising and frightening film as expected. The ending is silly and rushed and there never felt much at stake, the outcome easily figured out.

Overall, rather mediocre but there is worse out there. 4/10 Bethany Cox

silly B-movie

Most of America is dead from a dark apocalypse. Married couple Nina Monroe (Kate Bosworth) and Mark West (Tyler Hoechlin) are two of the survivors. They leave the relative safety of their Minneapolis suburb for Milwaukee and Nina's mom. The normally five hour drive becomes a Homer's Odyssey of The Warriors gauntlet facing off against a variety of Mad Max villains.

I don't mind the B-movie apocalypse. I would like it to start a little better. Bombers spraying black death makes little sense and the need to make sense detracts from its silly B-movie premise. It's better to start without it. Not all apocalypses need to be explained. The other issue is that not everybody need to reconnect with our couple. I don't know why Betsy is following them and why those rescued girls aren't following her. The gamblers aren't as scary as they are made out to be. I don't mind this type of movie but they do need to be a little better.

Garbage with Fake Reviews

IMDb used to be a serious site about cinema; however it is impressive the number of fake reviews some films have after the recent modification of this site. "The Domestics" is one of them. There are reviews promoting this garbage with the intention of luring the unwary reader.

"The Domestics" is awful and stupid. There is neither explanation nor development of the situation that caused the apocalypse. Why the black gas was released by the government? The lead couple performed by Tyler Hoechlin and Kate Bosworth show no chemistry. The annoying Nina West after listening to a metal rock very loud (despite the dangerous gangs everywhere) becomes a very bold heroin, shooting at the gangsters. My vote is three.

Title (Brazil): "Os Domésticos" ('The Domestics")
