Movie Review: The Cabin (2013)

In 2013, a film short hit the film festivals by storm winning various awards. That film was The Cabin, written and directed by Tommy Faircloth (Director of Generation Ax and Crinoline Head).

The Cabin stars Jason Vail (Dollface, Valley of the Sasquatch) as John, a somewhat awkward but seemingly nice guy that native Laura (played by Morgan Monnig (Dollface, Family Possessions) meets on a dating site.

The film starts out introducing us to Laura as she is packing her luggage for a weekend outing with her "online friend" John, much to her friend Sarah's uncertainty (voiced by Shelby Washburn). Sarah is reassured by her friend that he's a "nice guy" as she leaves for her weekend getaway.

The film picks up as you see the chemistry that both Jason and Morgan have on screen. You also see Jason's range of acting as he bring a certain realism to the viewers that there is something off about John. Morgan does a great job of bringing her clichéd horror female to life on screen, even the actual cabin is a character in the film with its own backstory which alone is impressive as it has a certain comfortable uneasiness to it.

It doesn't take long before Laura begin to question her decision on going up to the cabin...one that ultimately will change her life.

The dialogue, the eerie subtleness, the cinematography brought to life by the writer/director is quite amazing & beautiful to watch, especially considering that this film was made in 2 days.

If you get a chance to see this film, it's one that will stay with you for a while.
