North of the Border Laughs

One would think combining American and Canadian humor in one film is guaranteed to generate twice the laughs as a movie set in just one country. The premise of the state of Vermont and the United States extending its borders over to its northern neighbors because of a mistake in the original survey offers a playful clash between the two cultures. Because of this thesis, "Super Troopers 2" is able to deliver on both fronts. I'm one of the few who haven't seen the original, so I can't compare the two, which makes it advantageous for me to enjoy ST2 without contrasting the pair. The humor is a bit sophomoric in spots, but overall, with the trippy situations and surreal camera placements, the "Broken Lizard" team of writers delivers non-stop laughs that launch from the opening shot to the lingering fade-out.

Those who give this effort a low score probably sport a scour throughout life. For the life of me I just can't believe people don't appreciate such wacky humor. Can't wait for a third one if this is able to ring the $$$ at the box office.

Meow!

Here comes the sequel to 2001's cult comedy bringing loads of more of the same. This is probably not a bad thing, considering "Super Troopers 2" was crowd-funded at IndieGoGo - so there must have been a considerable number of fans asking for extra helping.

When a border dispute arises between the U.S. and Canada, the Super Troopers are tasked with establishing a Highway Patrol station in the disputed area. Writing and starring Broken Lizard comedy gang (of course),plus some other faces you'll be happy to see again, such as Brian Cox.

"Super Troopers 2" offers an eclectic menu of different kinds of humor, including stoner, raunchy, and obscure jokes, not to mention a distinct montypythonian vibe. So there's seemingly something for anybody with a taste for mainstream comedy.

The greatest thing about the movie is this unique vibe the gang has. Everyone has dived so eagerly into their character, embracing the "going everywhere and trying everything" kind of attitude, and the obscurity of it all...

At its best, it's so freeflowing and unpredictable - even able to go from "meh" to inspired lunacy during the same setpiece - that one can't help but be charmed a little.

There may be no one essential scene that would stick into mind like the original's "meow game". But the result is still markedly funnier and more watchable than many other recent cult comedy sequels we did not exactly need, including "Zoolander 2", "Anchorman 2", "Bad Santa 2" and "Dumb and Dumber 2".

What is bad, however, is the movie not having much of a screenplay.

Just dicking around is fine for a while, sure, but there will come a saturation point when all this constant mouthing off gets stale without a proper story or interesting characters.

Not to mention Broken Lizard's eager and tireless rehashing of the same jokes over and over again (cocky Canadians, stupid Americans, reckless cops).

"Super Troopers 2" may have enough fun moments to be worth of comedy lover's while. But even a mighty bridge can't stand without some proper base pillars.

comedy eh

The guys are going on with their lives after getting fired from their jobs. They go on a fishing trip in Canada. They are recruited by Vermont Governor Jessman (Lynda Carter) to patrol a newly-discovered American territory as the border gets redrawn. Guy LeFranc (Rob Lowe) is the local mayor. The guys discover a dastardly passive smuggling conspiracy.

The guys continue to be charismatically-challenged. They do have the bowling league charms of their own but they aren't top level comedic stars. With that in mind, the idea of fighting Canadians could be funny. The setup is way too convoluted. The jokes become scattershot. The border move idea should be abandoned. The guys could be hired as Mounties and find an evil Canadian conspiracy. Canada should be a hellscape behind the false facade. Canadians should be hockey fighting everyday and saying sorry as they do it. On a personal note, they need to get rid of the fake French-Canadian accent. It's tough to listen and understand which makes the jokes harder to enjoy. The easiest way to grade this is to count the laughs. The number is pretty low. The central conceit is not driving the movie very well and the guys are not pushing the satire hard enough.
