Brilliant yarn about Hong Kong girls growing up!

Teen girls work through numerous personal and inter-social issues, basically what Glass Tears should have been. The film does and incredible job of pushing the protagonists through a series of completely believable choices, events and situations. Moments which compel, if not bluntly force them to each review and reassert their sense of themselves as individuals and as part of a larger society. Excellent camera work, acting, staging and pacing. Love this film, find this one NOW!

If you like movies like Kids, Thirteen or Christiane F. this movie is for you!

Great obscure Chinese film!

This movie depicts the life of four teenage girls and it's not pretty: Teen pregnancy, prostitution, drug abuse and traffic, violence. The most shocking thing in this flick is the girls have 13-14 years old! It is shot documentary style with some surrealistic scenes. Those surrealistic scenes happens in a party scene and this is the best part of Spacked out. It is very realistic and all the cast does a great job except the one tomboy teen, she pisses me off at some parts but at the end of the film you're gonna understand why she's like this. Not haunting as Christiane F. or shocking as Kids, but it's very realistic and it's a bit shocking and depressing. Hard to find but it deserves to be seen! Great Film!

It's spacked alright!

Great title for this movie.

This story of teen angst, confusion, refusing to conform: all shown through Cookie and her friends. It's definitely good that the movie is NOT trying to be like an afterschool special saying don't do drugs, don't have sex, and so on. But, it does try to help viewers understand why some adolescents may live like this. Maybe it's fear of the future, lack of guidance or support, or coping by losing one's self. There's no right or wrong, good or bad. Despite a few light moments, Spacked Out has some dark, disturbing themes which may offend some. Then again, it's the realness and the characters themselves that made it so fascinating. Especially Bean Curd who gives such a true performance which, at times, seems frighteningly real! So, watch this one and see what you can draw from it.
