..and I've seen A LOT. This film captured ZERO in the way of another culture, the beauty of Iceland, the cohesiveness of a team, the fact that they were all indeed 'regular athletes' and so on. I can't believe I actually sat and wasted my time watching it. The bulk of the team was one person hastily entering the van, gasping for breath, and the next person cycling. Nothing deeper than one of the crew talking about being present and in the moment. Terrible film, don't waste your time. Watch 'Bikes of Wrath' instead. Oh, and if you want to know how the team wound up, since it was actually a race, you don't get that nugget either. No one ever says how they did. Stupid.
Plot summary
SISU follows a ten person cycling team from a small community in Maine on a journey to compete in a 1,358KM race around the perimeter of Iceland. The one hour documentary combines an observational filmmaking style with elements of a travelogue and engagement of action sport. Set just after the summer solstice, the team faces rapidly changing road and weather conditions as they push forward against the 72 hour time limit. The film explores the motivations of amateur athletes pursuing a massive physical challenge and considers the role adventure plays in contemporary life.
