over the top Kiss

It's Kiss World and we're all just living in it. Kiss World is an amusement park based on the band. There is a witch haunting it. Mystery solvers are called in. Kiss fan Daphne decides to volunteer the group's services without an actual invitation.

The Kiss boys are basically cartoons themselves. So this is very natural to the band. There is a disconnect in that they are flying around in a superhero movie whereas the Scooby gang is still grounded. I would have preferred having the Band maintain their human scale. They could solve the mystery Scooby style. This just goes off the rails but that is Kiss in essence. It's ironic that it's all caused by drugs. The other missed opportunity is Daphne's fandom. She should be in her Kiss makeup throughout the movie. This does have the band's great songs. This is still fun but it is a bit of a mess.

A bit too goofy and cartoony...

Of course you'd find KISS to be the band that put their name to the "Scooby-Doo" franchise, for better or worse. And of course you see a lot of shameless KISS merchandise promotion here, which I really hope was a spoof on themselves and their ability to put KISS on everything that can make a buck.

Now, "Scooby-Doo! And Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery" was your average run-of-the-mill Scooby-Doo adventure. But throw the rock band KISS into the equation and you end up with this movie. Plus, there were some very trippy scenes throughout the story as well.

While the story is entertaining for what a Scooby-Doo animated movie usually is, then "Scooby-Doo! And Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery" is not the best of animated Scooby-Doo adventures available.

It is, of course, always nice to have the same cast return to do the voicing for the characters in the franchise; Frank Welker (as Fred and Scooby-Doo),Mindy Cohn (as Velma),Grey Griffin (as Daphne) and Matthew Lillard (as Shaggy).

And having KISS in the animated movie was a bit of a mixed experience for me. Sure, with their history of putting KISS on anything with commercial value, I can relate to them joining in here on the Scooby-Doo franchise. However, giving the KISS members superabilities and being able to fly? Come on... No, that just gave this particular animated Scooby-Doo movie a way too cartoony and childish feel. Something that worked against the entertainment value of this 2015 animated movie in my opinion.

Sure, there were fun moments to the storyline as well. But the overall enjoyment of it was just mediocre. Hence I am rating "Scooby-Doo! And Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery" a five out of ten stars.

An Honest Review

I REALLY don't like Kiss... at all. But, I have to be honest, Kiss does an a GREAT job of making fun of themselves, and they even bring it to the point where they make fun of the things that make me don't like Kiss....

... so, as a band, as individuals, they clearly have a great sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously... and, from time to time you wonder if Kiss added jokes to the script, or if it was just written by an opinionated audiophile

... even if they really only have a couple of decent songs... tops.

And when you pair that "we don't take ourselves seriously" tongue-in-cheek humor with Scooby-Doo it makes for a really entertaining watch... even if you're like me and Kiss, music wise, is everything that's wrong with Glam Rock (musically speaking).
