Popped along to the cinema to see this as it was only £5. There were six people in there. What a shame because this is excellent! It's a film that keeps you perpetually off balance. The acting is top notch, the score mesmerising and haunting, and everything else about it exudes quality and skill.
The tone and subject matter are dark so don't expect much in the way of jollity, but it is always waiting to thrill you with a look, a frame, an unexpected turn of events. A real treat. I look forward to what the directors do next.

Plot summary
It's during a term studying animal euthanasia that veterinary student Rose (Ann Skelly) decides to contact Ellen (Orla Brady),the birth mother who gave her up for adoption. But Ellen, who is now a successful London-based actress, doesn't want to know. Undeterred, Rose will not be ignored. And curiosity leads her to discoveries that shake the fragile identity she has built for herself. Directors Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, also known as Desperate Optimists, have spent years making formally rigorous, atmospheric cinema that often deals with the uncanny effects of impersonation and the slippery nature of truth. With Rose Plays Julie (2019) hey have crafted a slow-burn thriller that builds a sense of dread inside an exquisite world of immaculate architecture, rendered through an icy performance style and enveloped by a claustrophobic soundtrack. Ann Skelly and Orla Brady are both exacting and measured in their delivery, as the film takes us through longing and revenge to arrive at the dark places of power and its abuses. This is frank, immersive and decidedly feminist filmmaking.

Dialogue is Important
DVD lacked subtitles for the elderly, disabled, hearing impaired, and ESL viewers. Disrespectful & cheap on the part of the producers especially when audio & enunciation is poor made worse with varying British dialects.
Very slow moving made even worse with lots of film time filled with slow panning camera views of essentially nothing of plot significance. Cheap atmosphere trick. Storyline semi-captivating with a different hook based on male extreme behavior seeking sex.
Not the smartest dialogue one can find. Said a lot: "Can I ask you something?" Duh, you just did.
Didn't expect
The finding real father story turn out like that I totally didn't expect. Sick sick sick. Dislike the content and why make such a film? Try to tell men are like that ?
