Outstanding action movie.

I don't know why this doesn't have more reviews and why the lead actor isn't in more movies. This is one of the best action movies i've seen in a long time. Someone is dropping the ball by not putting Bruce Khan in more movies.

Battle Island

Do you like action movies? It's almost as simple as that if you want to know if the movie is something for you to watch. While I do think the main character lacks a bit of charisma overall, the fight choreography is quite something. You will see a lot of violence and stunts. There is not that much of a story, the premise is in the title obviously.

Also the third act is almost ... needless. It's getting way too heavy and serious and ups the stakes to a degree that the movie is never able to profit from. Quite the opposite. I can see many viewers getting rather angry about certain developments. But overall a decent effort

Exemplary martial arts from Korea

South Korean cinema has flirted with the martial arts genre for some years now; thrillers such as THE MAN FROM NOWHERE and THE CITY OF VIOLENCE have featured some electrifying moments, but have never been all-out action pictures. That changes with the release of the low budget but high octane movie REVENGER, set on an unnamed island populated by a bunch of Asian prisoners. Martial arts hero Bruce Khan (a former stuntman upgraded to lead role) plays a grieving cop who literally washes up on the shore looking for revenge, and boy, does he find it.

This is another movie heavily indebted to THE RAID movies (like many others from Asia) and it does indeed feature a sequence of blistering fight scenes which are constantly innovative and boasting exemplary choreography. It's hard-hitting stuff in which Khan shows off his skills in terms of agility, kicking, throwing and even sword-fighting in one stand-out moment. The story is acceptable and the supporting players give interesting performances, while the villains are certainly villainous enough to make an impact. Make no mistake, though, this is a film all about the fights and they're very nearly as good as it gets.
