Clever indie film

Well that was a surprise. I definitely wasn't expecting this movie to be as good as it was. Other then the ending I thought this movie was really good. It had a great cast and original plot. I can't really think of another film quite like it. I wouldn't necessarily call it a horror film though. It was more like a dark comedy. 6 stars from me.

creepy little indie

David (Brian Landis Folkins) is a middle-aged man taking caring of his mother full-time at home. She's suffering from dementia. He's lonely and paying for a video dating service. He's not getting any dates. He picks out a videotape titled Rent-A-Pal. In the tape, Andy (Wil Wheaton) seems to be talking directly to him and becoming his friend. The dating service calls him with a match to Lisa (Amy Rutledge).

This is a creepy little film. David is creepy. Andy is creepy. The dating service is pretty good although I would be happier if it turns out to be a scam. Lisa is a breath of fresh air. She's a great turn. Folkins is a good loser but I would like a bigger name in the role. I think someone like David Harbour would destroy this role. This is a good creepy little indie.

I am David!

David (Brian Landis Folkins ) lives in his mother's basement as her live-in caretaker. He is attempting to meet a girl in the Denver area through VHS video dating, giving us an idea of the era. David ends up getting a tape with Andy, a rent-a-pal on it. Over time Andy appears to be able to see what is happening to David and have actual conversations. Andy starts to take over David's life.

It is a slow moving film and when it picks up it is because David breaks character in an unbelievable way. I thought the film had potential but it fell short.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
