Twosabu Ilchae or "My Boss, My Student" is the sequel to the fantastic jopok comedy "My Boss, My Hero". The original still stands as one of my all time favorite movies, and one of my all time favorite Korean movies. It was a creative, well made and written movie, with excellent acting and direction. It's sequel may not fair as well however.
The sequel follows the lead Gae Do-Shik in his quest to get a college degree. To do this, he decides to student teach at a local high school, the catch, Gae Do-Shik is a 30something gang leader. The plot itself is largely the same as the prequel, and with the same leads, it is easy to know what to expect, and as the original was a great movie, all this bodes well for this installment.
First and foremost, this is a comedy-drama, unmistakably so. It jumps back and forth between well acted comedy that is quick and clever, and wrenching if not somewhat predictable drama. In fact, the dramatic aspects are largely reminiscent of basically every teacher drama out there, from GTO and Gokusen, to Dangerous Minds and Mr. Hollands Opus, while the comedy is a culmination of several elements, especially direction and editing.
The movie runs just over two hours, which at best is maybe 20 minutes too long, however, this is a minor complaint. This is a solid movie with several fantastic elements like characters, acting, and direction, making this a movie that won't disappoint. A worthy sequel.

Doo-sik (JUNG Jun-ho),the number two of a leading gang, the D-Dogs, is full of ambition and expectation, for his once in a life time opportunity to be back to school not as a student, not a guard, but as a student teacher! It's really something for him, 'cause he already failed to complete his high school course years ago. Now it's kind of a second chance for him. He just interprets this teaching practice as something like a social adaptation course for the prisoners who are going to be freed and back to society soon. But has he got what it takes as a teacher? Even on the first day, he is just out of the way and eccentric. He enters school through the dog hole. And it doesn't take long to sum up that his behavior is just way too much for the students to accept and respect in a teacher. And as the fate would have it, his own boss, the leader of the D-Dogs, is now right in front of him, as one of the students, and two of his loyal men are out of reach every time he's in trouble! Doo-sik just dashes this way and rushes that way and all the incidents are leading Doo-sik to a place no one expects.

So much good, so much not so good.
So-So
I've never seen the original, but I have seen this sequel, which I have to say, was an average, mediocre film. All actors and actresses made a great performance. Story and element was unique. What really did affect my grading of this movie was based on what most Korean movies had. I'm Korean and I've seen numerous amounts of Korean movies, but none did ever have a great ending. They always ended in the weirdest way possible. Some of their endings were just crude and off, which ruins the entire movie itself. This movie still did have a near satisfying ending. But I'd have to say that the progression of the film was just either TOO slow or TOO unnecessary. I'd say that there were some crude, funny jokes added in scenes, but the story itself went by too slowly. I almost dozed off just watching the entire film. The ending just builds up its height due to some surprising, shocking moment. Besides that, the film was notoriously INACTIVE, as how I would have felt.
