Over the Top: Power Rangers Meets Texas Chainsaw

This movie is a typical "tongue and cheek" Japanese satire of X-Men. The film features ridiculous governmental soldiers wearing nose cannons, borderline offensive content that may not be suitable for everybody. The type of silly effects, when a body gets a head or limb chopped off, 10 gallons of vivid red blood issues from the wound.

The story is absurd in the extreme, when the protagonist Rin has her 16th birthday, she not only discovers she is a mutant but both her parents are murdered by the government! This alone is a prime example of how silly and elaborate the story quickly becomes. I guess one could draw a comparison to Peter Parker getting bit by a spider and his Uncle being shot all at once. It would seem that not only is it a requirement to have superpowers one must also have a super tragedy to re-examine their part in the universe. Rin in this aspect is no exception, with people from her home town wanting to skin her and mount her on display at the local mall. Then meeting a weird group of girls led by a slightly demonic kabuki figure.

Lots of cheesy effects, blood, guts, and gore, makes this movie a laugh riot. The boss fights are very confusing with the viewer wondering who they should be cheering on to victory. With weapons like an ass chainsaw and boob swords this is not a family friendly film. I viewed this subtitled on Netflix this month.

I am rapidly losing mt memory

A group of mutant girls with abilities that spoof the "X Men" go to war with the humans. The film centers on Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) who has big bad "Wolverine" claw. She is half human and displays empathy for her victims.

Plenty of blood spray, I mean bring an umbrella, fire hose inane spray...no pumping squirts like their US counter parts. Film include some ugly cat fights, including a chainsaw from the butt of a cheerleader.

No swearing or sex. Some nudity.

Blood and mutilation aplenty...

For a movie of this particular extreme genre, then "Mutant Girls Squad" (or "Sentô shôjo: Chi no tekkamen densetsu") actually was somewhat more enjoyable than others in the same weird genre.

First of all, these movie was drenched in blood and outrageous gore, and it is done to an absurd extreme, so you should know that in advance, that this genre is splatter extreme! But what made "Mutant Girls Squad" more enjoyable than many others was that the movie was focusing heavily on the story and the characters and not the blood, gore and mayhem itself.

The storyline was actually really nice and it was easy to follow and immerse yourself into. Just keep in mind that most things here will be over-the-top-extreme. And the characters were well fleshed out and given great personalities.

I assume that having 3 splatter/gore directors coming together on one project was bound to be something great in the end.

There was a lot of action in "Mutant Girls Squad", which was nice, making it a nice mixture of action and splatter. And I must say that the action scenes were nicely executed, especially the entire scene where Rin was chased through parts of town. Of course, what you will see in this movie is not action on the level that you would see in other Asian movies, such as those by Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, Tony Jaa, etc. But still, it worked out well enough, and the action complimented the extremity of the mutants nicely.

I found the acting in the movie to be quite good as well, and people did good jobs with their given roles.

There is a lot of really strange things in the movie, and it makes you wonder how they just comes up with that kind of stuff. I could mention things like the armed forces having machine guns mounted over their noses, or a mutant girl with a chainsaw coming out of her rectum, or a mutant girl with katana-blades extruding from her nipples. Yeah, it is quite extreme, but this is what this particular genre is all about; being extreme and doing things that haven't been done before, and to top out the other movies in the same market.

I enjoyed "Mutant Girls Squad", as it was a grat mixture of splatter, gore, action and pure fun. It might not be suitable for everyone, just a friendly word of warning.
