Enjoyable but not exactly a must-see.

"Man Up" is a decent film but could have been better. While it's a romantic-comedy, it's also has some content that isn't necessarily that funny nor romantic.

When the film begins, Nancy (Lake Bell) is dead set against yet another set-up by her friends. This 30-something single lady is tired of dating and dreads yet another loser. Later in the film, however, she does something very strange and impulsive...and incredibly selfish. She meets a man who is expecting to meet a blind date and he thinks SHE is the woman. While it's hard to believe, she decides he seems like a pretty nice guy and pretends to be his date!! They have a great time...until he discovers she's NOT his date! At this point it naturally gets complicated and they are at each other's throats at times...and they end up pretty much exactly where you'd expect by the end of the film.

The story is rather original and at times the characters are interesting...though Nancy is clearly a selfish lady. I was a bit alarmed by how much the pair drank and drank and drank on their dates. This isn't exactly sexy and perhaps others won't notice or be alarmed...but the father in me kept thinking "Lady...you've already had about a dozen drinks...and you don't even know this guy!". But on balance despite some difficulty I had liking the pair, the good does outweigh the bad.

By the way, I was impressed by the American-born Lake Bell. While I am NOT a Brit and perhaps they could discern that her accent sucked, it sure sounded real to me and if I hadn't seen her in "In a World" (a film I much preferred),I would have just assumed she was a Brit.

Needed a Hugh Grant type

Man Up is inspired by the Richard Curtis rom-coms. It teams up an American star with a British actor. Nancy (Lake Bell) who feels unlucky in love and feeling life is passing her by ends up mistakenly going on a blind date with Jack (Simon Pegg) who is still affected from a recent divorce.

Both strike up a good rapport sharing similar interests in music and movies despite Nancy being stalked all evening by a former school friend who she had a chance encounter with at a bar. Meanwhile Jack bumps with his ex wife and her new lover.

This is a feel good film with a good blend of comedy, romance and cynicism. The Rory Kinnear character is too obnoxious and I think Pegg is not quite right for this type of rom-coms.

Good film for a chick flick/comedy

This film is very easy to watch. While I don't normally like the sentimental crap that chick flicks are normally, this film managed to make me laugh out loud several times.

Good story line that has been done over and over again.. Boy meets girl blah blah. Although it was new enough not to send me to sleep.

The character Nancy is a proper Tom boy come sexy minx, loved her.

Pegg played his normal character, I actually don't think he's acting.

The night seemed to go on and on, how on earth would you ever fit all that into one evening is beyond me... Hey it is escapism though after all.

Watch it, it's very easy to watch and follow. So if you fancy a lazy film that doesn't have lots of twisty plots then this is the one. 8/10
