Nice movie about French teens. Contrary to "the class", it relates the lives of well-off teenagers. The story focuses on Lola aka "Lol" who is dealing with school, love, friendship and family issues. Her mother, played by Sophie Marceau, is having an affair with her ex-husband and is torn between her responsibilities as a mother and her irresponsible behavior as an adult. As for Lol, she breaks up with her boyfriend who told her he had sex with another girl over the summer and starts to fall for his best friend. In a world where I-pods, cell phones & MSN have taken so much importance, communication is often difficult between teens and their overwhelmed parents.
If you liked this movie, I recommend you to watch: "La Boum"; "Nos 18 ans"; "15 ans et 1/2"
Plot summary
When Lola's boyfriend is unfaithful to her on his summer holiday, she dumps him and flirts with his best friend as punishment. But as their class prepares to leave on an excursion to London, the relationship heats up.

Nice movie
Lol ftw
The french original - a movie that probably lesser people have seen than the US remake ... which as you can tell by my rating I consider a "tragedy" (this might be overstating it, but you get where I'm heading with it). Sophie Marceau is best known for some of her movies in the 80s ... I had not seen her in a while before seeing this, which probably is more on me than on her. And while I admire her looks and I think she has aged more than gracefully (which is something that sadly cannot be said about other actresses - the pressure of the movie and beauty industry getting to them),it is her acting here that will entice you.
I've said it on the page of the remake, but I'll say it here again: While Demi Moore is a fine actress, if you compare the two performances and the movies in general, this one is the clear cut winner. The movie does concentrate mostly on the girls (teenagers),but gives us other perspectives as well. The dialog and the scenes feel genuine .. like real life and not something put upon by a script writer ... which I reckon is the highest honor ... or close to it when it comes to screenplays. If you don't have issues with subtitles or are fluent in French, go ahead and make your day.
Sophie's Choice ...
... yes, folks, she really is and it was a nice, albeit shrewdly cynical to have her playing the mother to the kind of daughter she herself played in her breakthrough debut Boum in 1980. To be honest I never much cared for Marceau the surly teenage rebel, a part she was saddled with for several years but she has of late blossomed and not least behind the camera in Parlez-moi d'amour whilst proving herself quite a useful actress in recent years. As for this entry I doubt if it will do much if anything for anyone over forty and it would have had no appeal for me without Marceau but it should please its target audience without much trouble.
