I sat down in 2021 to watch the 2011 Hong Kong action comedy "Xiao Yong Chun" (aka "I Love Wing Chun"). And when I did so, I hadn't even heard about the movie. But still, with it being a Hong Kong movie that I hadn't seen before, then of course I found the time to do so.
With the likes of Wah Yuen and Qiu Yuen on the cast list, I must admit that I had expected to be in for something perhaps akin to "Kung Fu Hustle".
Sure, "I Love Wing Chun" is a watchable action comedy, but it just didn't prove to be outstanding. So writers Chen Chen Lim and Lex Tsai just didn't really manage to churn out something overly impressive. But don't get me wrong, it is not a bad movie. Not at all. It just wasn't impressive.
And I wanted to enjoy "I Love Wing Chun", I really did. But director Lex Tsai just only managed to mildly entertain me with this 2011 action comedy. And while I did manage to sit through the movie, this is hardly a movie that I will be returning to watch a second time.
Sure, "I Love Wing Chun" has an adequate ensemble of actors and actresses, with the most noticeable being Wah Yuen and Qiu Yuen, of course.
The comedy in "I Love Wing Chun" was subtle at best. On occasion it did manage to get me to smirk, but it never did get me to laugh. So the movie wasn't a particularly impressive comedy movie.
"I Love Wing Chun" is a movie that came and went without leaving a lasting impression. As such, I am rating it a very bland and mediocre five out of ten stars.
