Call it what you want, Holy Motors is a wonderful viewing experience, and Lavant excels in his multiple roles.
But they are not really multiple roles, he takes costume changes every once in a while, each one becoming a little more deplorable than the last.
It's almost as if its some kind of psychedelic Opera we are experiencing, and the people that Lavant meets and reaches are touched in more ways than one.
In one instance, he is a businessman, the next a CGI serpent, and then the stuff of nightmares, a frightening character who eats flowers. This section of the film is very Lynchian, as the character almost shocks as much as the man who lived behind the diner in Mulholland drive.
In some instances, you think to yourself, is it just fantasy, are we seeing someones dream? Because he appears to be invincible, and after all, in dreams, we can take on any persona, and be who we want in an instant.
With some great support, Holy Motors isn't a mainstream movie in any way, shape or form, it's the stuff of nightmares, like Noe has had some sort of affair with Lyncj and Cronenberg, and this is the outcome.
I can really understand some peoples problems with the film, but I for one found it a moving, beautiful piece of cinema.
Plot summary
From dawn to dusk, a few hours in the life of Monsieur Oscar, a shadowy character who journeys from one life to the next. He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, family man. He seems to be playing roles, plunging headlong into each part - but there are no cameras present.

Surreal nightmares, without a face....
Holy Moly WTF?
It's art. It's art. It's art.
That must be the mantra, and the excuse for this movie. That would explain all those glowing critical praises. It's meaning is so deep that nobody will ever be able to figure it out. From the mind of Leos Carax, Denis Lavant plays a master of disguises. He goes out in unrecognizable costumes, rides in stretch limos, and have crazy adventures. If this was an art performance out in the real world, these individual vignettes could be quite fascinating especially the beauty and the beast photography session. As performances in a movie, the acting were all tiring, boring, and wooden. The stories were surreal but uninteresting. Overall, it was pretentious, unemotional, and meaningless. However, I will say that it was unique. Certainly not your everyday multiplex experience.
Pretentious nonsense
Pretentious nonsense. Random, meaningless plot, dressed up to be something deep through minimal dialogue and the occasional suicide. 100% style, 0% substance, and even the "style" isn't at all stylish.
