I have an uncle

Alex (Callan McAuliffe) is a credit card hacker, attempting to sell items bought with stolen credit cards in Toronto. Here he meets Sye (Daniel Eric Gold) who has connections. They operate a very good business when they add a Kira (Lorraine Nicholson) who also has connections. They also love to disrupt the banking system. They eventually wind up in Hong Kong with the goal of contacting "Zed" (Clifton Collins Jr.) the chief hacker who runs the hacker web site on the dark web.

The film also goes under the title "Anonymous". It is also described as a "love story" but you have to look for it. The film ends rather awkwardly after creating a great tale.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Not the Greatest Hacker Film

I'm not really sure if I can call this a film about hackers namely because most of the time they simply steal credit card numbers and use these credit cards to buy lots of stuff, and then sell the stuff on the black market. Okay, that is hacking to an extent, but it isn't what I consider to be proper hacking, or at least the type of hacking that I tend to watch hacking films for. Okay, having people steal your credit card info over the internet is a serious problem these days, but I suspect the events in this film took place a while back.

The story is about this kid that came to Canada from the Ukraine so that his parents could start a new life. He quickly learnt that he could make money by clicking on links on the internet (I suspect that it has a lot to do with going to websites and simply clicking on ads, and while you could write a script to do a similar thing, I suspect that people have cottoned on to that, and if you were to do that you would probably find that your IP Address is pretty quickly banned from the site, or at least from the advertiser's site that is forced to pay out all of the money due to the clicks).

Anyway, his mother loses her job, so he decides to try something a bit more hairy, and that is stealing credit card information (and I note that he was able to write a script to do that, so I'm sure he probably also wrote a script to do the clicking),and pretty quickly discovers that he can make a decent amount of money that way, especially buying stuff over the internet and then selling it to people in his home town. However, things change when he moves to the big city, and he ends up becoming friends with a rather sociable person who is able to move goods much better than him.

Mind you, there were some problems with this film, particularly with the twist at the end. In a way it didn't actually surprise me because I could see it coming from a mile away, though I won't give away the twist, just because having such twists in the film does make it somewhat better, even if the twist is a little more obvious that others, such as in Fight Club.

Anyway, this film wasn't too bad, but as I mentioned, there are much better hacker films out there. It is also said that this film is based on a true story, and I'm somewhat interested in knowing some more about the true story that it is based upon since, as I mentioned, there are some things that didn't quite add up in the end (which I don't want to comment on on the grounds that I don't want to give away too much). However, if there is one thing that is important with this film and that is be very careful with whom you give your credit card details to over the internet.

An above average movie made with a below average budget

It's rare to find a film, as unheard of and made for such a low budget as 'Hacker' was, be made with such a high degree of quality. From the opening moments it was clear this movie was going to be told with a lot of class. I suppose a film subject like hacking really wouldn't seem right told any other way. Still, that doesn't make it any easier to achieve.

The thing that probably surprised me the most about the film was how good the acting was. Callan McAuliffe in particular in the lead role was an absolute delight to watch go about his craft. A reasonable amount of the film was narrated by him too and not since Morgan Freeman in 'The Shawshank Redemption' can I remember such an ideal voice for such a thing. Daniel Eric Gold also thoroughly impressed me and I think it's fair to say there wasn't a weak link in the entire cast.

'Hacker' was a really fun watch. The pacing is terrific. It glides effortlessly from scene to scene and there is always plenty going on to keep the viewer entertained. The story structuring was also very well handled and the film ended in a very clever and interesting way. Altogether I was very impressed by 'Hacker' and would thoroughly recommend people to check it out.
