Whisper & SHOUT is an East Germany documentary made shortly before the fall of the Wall about that country's rock scene. A number of bands are followed as they rehearse, perform and travel from gig to gig. Both musicians and fans are interviewed about music and their lives. The fans complain about how boring their lives are and how live music is the one few exciting things they have to look forward. More serious complaints (such as about censorship and police harassment) are more obliquely referred to. It's an interesting but not riveting, time capsule look at a world few Americans know about, although contemporaries of the music and the GDR will probably find it much more enjoyable.

It includes clips from concerts and interviews with fans and members of various bands, such as Feeling B's Christian Lorenz and Paul Landers, now members of Rammstein. This documentary, shot in 35mm, played to over one million viewers in sold-out theaters in East Germany. Audiences were drawn not only to see their favorite bands on the screen; they were also surprised that this film made it past the censors.

A moderately interesting look at the rock scene in 80s East Germany

Disappointing for no one!
If you think this documentary is silly, you are on the wrong track. It's about SILLY, a former rock band and other music groups, including Feeling B (B like Berlin),predecessor band for two members of Rammstein (namely Paul & Flake). They all not only deliver interesting music, but also talk about the problems of (amateur) bands in the everyday life of East Germany. All in all, it's not a wasted time.
