Clever special effects, but the rest is like a damp squib

I really wanted to like this movie, as the concept of a waterlogged London intrigued me and I love a vast majority of the cast. But what a bitter disappointment. Granted the photography and special effects are great and very cleverly done. And the music is decent. Everything else however went down under-water like a sunken ship.

The story and concept were really intriguing. But it wasn't told very well. Why? Because the film is very stodgily paced, while the subplots are badly underdeveloped and clichéd and the climax is very badly botched. Then we have flat direction and an awful script. Even the acting was disappointing. Robert Carlyle, Tom Courtenay and David Suchet are truly talented characters, but their characters are not interesting. Neither are everyone else's. In fact all the characters are very cardboard especially Jessalyn Gilsig's and Joanne Whalley's.

Overall, a big disappointment, looks great but it is badly told and dull. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Oh just.....drown already.

When you read the premise, and see the cast list, you think you're going to be in for something quite special. The only thing I can really say is, didn't Ton Hardy develop his looks some years later? No, all joking aside, this really is a mess, the version I have is much longer then the running time suggests. There's nothing wrong with the story, it's quite clever, I have gripes with the acting, script, direction and special effects, all are generated dire, the likes of Robert Carlyle, David Suchet and David Hayman battle with what's basically a woeful script. Some of the worst extras acting you will ever see, mass panic, and they're static, and at one stage grinning. It's 2007, but the effects look at times as if they've come from a 1970's Doctor Who story.

I remembered this quite don't, time has not been kind to it. 4/10

Not a bad effort

I remember this showing on ITV back in the day. I never bothered watching it because I couldn't see how they'd have the budget to do justice to a three-hour disaster miniseries set in London. Now I can see that they got funding from abroad which means this is a lot better than I was expecting. After the first half setting up the story, the second half is basically one extended set-piece as all of the different characters cope with different aspects of the Biblical flood. It never stops and the pacing is spot on, and the special effects are better than I was expecting too, especially for 2007. Plenty of cast members keep you interested here, and the only downside is the ultra-cheesy direction which looks dated and overblown in the extreme these days. Otherwise, not bad.
