Government scientists and the police all seem to be chasing ruth (gugu mbatha-raw). She has some power that they all want to examine. Or maybe just halt. But when she returns home, her mom (lorraine toussaint) isn't so sure it's going to work. Very sparse script.. we're 35 minutes in, and we don't know much. Then at forty minutes, we see ruth's daughter lila show off her powers. Can the three generations of this family stop everyone from chasing after them once and for all, without anyone getting hurt? Directed by julia hart. It's good, but i wish they had spent more time on character development... so much time spent on ruth running from the law.

The production is like a soft version of X-men. During an 8 year drought, Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw ) is 11 months sober and has seizures which cause tremors. The Feds are after her. She returns home, a bit unwelcome, and we discover that her mom and daughter likewise have gifts. The film becomes a drama of their life with a sci-fi fantasy background.

What really made the film was the young girl Lila (Saniyya Sidney ). Her role was interesting.

Recent years have shown a surge in superhero movies. Yet while most of them are "popcorn movies", there are also a few that try to change the formula a bit and go into different genres alltogether. Like this one, which may be described more like a drama than a movie that is there to just plain entertain you. Now I do feel that other superhero movies tackle social issues too - their main goal is to entertain or please fanboys though.

Acting is rock solid in this and the movie really has some interesting twists and turns throughout. The special effects also work really well in it. They are not that many, but when they appear on screen ... no pun intended, but let's say you won't be dissapointed. The story may or may not work for you, but is quite stellar - if as slow as it gets, which again may be something you either appreciate or are annoyed by.
