Blair Witch it ain't

EXISTS is another attempt by director Eduardo Sanchez to recapture some of his BLAIR WITCH PROJECT magic, albeit with disappointing results. Once again it's a found footage movie following an expedition into the forest, except this time around it's a bunch of annoying friends on the hunt for Bigfoot. What follows is full of extreme shaking, idiot behaviour, and lots of shouting and swearing along the way. Bigfoot is rarely seen and most of the running time involves running around or hiding inside cars and buildings. This is a film that tries very hard to be scary but really isn't; instead this disappoints throughout, feeling trite and predictable and tired. BLAIR WITCH it certainly isn't.

Festival of Clichés without Originality

Dora (Dora Madison Burge),Matt (Samuel Davis),Todd (Roger Edwards),Brian (Chris Osborn),and Liz (Denise Williamson) travel to an isolated cabin in the woods. They hit something on the road before arriving in their destination. Soon they are hunted down by a Bigfoot. Will they survive to the creature?

"Exists" is one of those teen horror movies where the viewer knows what will happen and only guesses who will be the next to die. The story does not have originality and abuses of the clichés associated to an awful camera. The only "originality" is the Bigfoot, instead of a maniac, or a vampire, or an evil spirit, or a monster or whatever. The rest is the same, with characters taking stupid decisions or actions to die, like Todd screaming and shooting in the woods to attract the Bigfoot. My vote is three.

Title (Brazil): "Eles Existem" ("They Exist")

HI. HOW ARE YOU.

A bunch of kids go to a cabin in the woods....cue spinner...and we have an angry Bigfoot. On their way to the cabin, they graze a Bigfoot with their vehicle and riles up the otherwise quiet creature. One of the nice things is that we get to see the creature early. There was no real character build up, just a bunch of kids running around screaming out the F-bomb while being chased by a man in a Bigfoot suit, which BTW was pretty nifty. The mouth seemed to be functional.

This was a hand held camera film with the typical nighttime green scenes as well as people whisper in the dark playing "what's that noise" but not nearly as bad as "Willow Creek." This Bigfoot is in East Texas where there have been numerous sightings, some claiming even in Dallas. There is no truth that one played for the 1992 Cowboys. The opening soundtrack gives you the feeling of impending doom. One guy in the group is a camera geek wanting to make a film for U-Tube. So there are small cameras always on everywhere with infinite battery power. Some of the shots, as usual, are ridiculous in order to create the realistic idea they discovered Bigfoot. Nothing like a ground cam. At some point in time the cabin gets electricity.

If you are a fan of the hand held genre, this one no better or worse than the pack. For me personally, it was a waste as I kept waiting for something to happen and then when it does, the camera angle sucked.
