A phenomenal crime action movie...

I happened to stumble upon "Dragon in Jail" (aka "Yuk chung lung") here in 2020. And oddly enough I hadn't even heard about it prior to happening to coming across it by sheer random luck.

Given my love and admiration of the Hong Kong cinema, of course I needed no persuasion to sit down and watch this 1990 movie from director Kent Cheng and writer Yin Nam. And with the likes of Andy Lau on the cast list, then it was just additional icing on the cake.

The storyline written by Yin Nam was actually very entertaining and enjoying. While there were lots of generic aspects to the movie for a movie of this type from the early 1990s, then "Dragon in Jail" actually managed to differentiate itself and stand out as a very memorable movie.

I will say that the movie was not off for an overwhelmingly impressive start within the prison, but the pacing of movie and the tone of the movie quickly changed for the better, and the movie went from mediocre to being great.

Needless to say that Andy Lau carried the movie phenomenally with his performance, and he really brought the movie to life on the screen. It was simply enjoyable to watch him in this movie. No wonder he is one of the biggest stars from the Hong Kong cinema.

"Dragon in Jail" is a wonderful mixture of action, drama and crime, and director Kent Cheng managed to bring it fruition on the screen quite well. As such, my rating of the movie lands on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars. I was genuinely and more than adequately entertained by the movie, and was surprised with how good it turned out to be.

Serious action drama that entertains!

Andy Lau has long been a favourite of mine. He is handsome, funny, and can hold his own in many action scenes, not to mention the man never seems to age!

Around the late 80's and early to mid 90's, Andy Lau was popping out many films per year that would put most Hollywood actors to shame.

The fantastic Dragon In Jail is one of them!

Brutal, well acted and focusing more on realistic action as opposed to kung fu, Dragon In Jail is quite dark in many ways, with Andy playing an innocent man who gets pulled in to the dark side for all the wrong reasons.

Once in jail, Andy meets Kenny Ho and they both become best friends which serves them both well throughout their journey.

But it isn't all heavy drama and prison scenes. On the outside, we have a host of brutal triad battles that lead to a hard hitting ending that keeps you on the edge until the last scene.

Directed by Kent (Fatty) Cheng, Dragon In Jail may not be recognised around the world much like Infernal Affairs and such, but it is well worth the watch!

Fantastic show!
