May 2023 -- the best 2 hi-concept releases in years. Wow
Considering that the post-Covid movie releases have been some of the worst in years, it it is a strange form of synchronicity that brings us two very polished hi-concept sci-fi films literally within a matter of days - DISCONTINUED and THE ARTIFICE GIRL. (My review of the latter is already in the IMDb database). Whereas Artifice Girl is a deconstruction of A. I. generally, Discontinued is much more ambitious, and aspires to be a construction of our entire existence. A goal long overdue. Whereas every generation in history had seen its share of existential angst, the current generation has a very legitimate beef. It has not only been burdened with hand-me-downs and leftovers from earlier generations -- not to mention the largest national debt in history -- but, Cycle Theory wise, it does indeed seem to be slightly cursed. Never in history have so few had the technology and the resources to control so many. And never in history have so few been so determined to do exactly that. Of the two movies, Artifice Girl is the more polished, possibly one of the best movies I have ever seen. But Discontinued works really hard to connect with the audience, and succeeds more often than it fails. Don't look these two gift horses in the mouth! ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer."
