The Flying Academy of Miss Crash & Burn

There was a sly, tongue-in-cheek style of the filmmakers in devising a set of outrageous situations revolving around a wacko flight instructor. Tanya Jackson is a skilled pilot who suffered a near-death experience when her small aircraft crashed in the storm, taking the life of her co-pilot and lover, Jake Matthews. Now fully recovered, Tanya takes under her wing her student Jake Sherman and becomes fixated on him with a crazed obsession.

At first, one empathized with Tanya for the loss of her friend and her long period of rehab. But the sympathy wears off in a hurry after Tanya murders a rival trainer, Captain "Gonzo" Rodgers, who had lured Jake away from her for advanced flying instruction.

My favorite character was Jake's mother-in-law, the indomitable Margaret Harris, who is also his boss. The quick-thinking Margaret instantly recognizes Tanya as a phony, but she makes the fatal mistake of allowing Tanya to fly her to Santa Barbara that turns out to be the final destination of Margaret's life.

Tanya has also creatively driven a wedge between Jake and his wife Annie by hiring actors to cavort in Jake's driveway and backyard and film them in aerial shots. The photos are then shown to Jake to give the impression that Annie has been unfaithful.

The action builds to a wild final scene in the sky with the filmmakers offering an homage to Alfred Hitchcock's famous cropduster scene in "North by Northwest." The dialogue was brisk and the pacing of the film superb. The actress playing Tanya was great in capturing nuances of a talented flight instructor and the imagination worthy of a nickname she earned from her daredevil flying: Miss Crash & Burn.

Fly the Frindly Skies

This is a silly film. Jake, who works for his mother-in-law takes flying lessons. The flying instructor has designs on Jake who can't because of his wife. The instructor has devious plans.

So bad it was laughable at times. Made for TV. Does have a clothed sex scene.

The best Lifetime movie of 2020 (so far)

"Deadly Mile High Club" was everything I want in a Lifetime movie. A story played very well by a very attractive cast. This movie had one dreamy actress after another (that was balanced out by a constantly shirtless Marc Herrmann). The cast also delivers the goods acting-wise. They all give very strong performances, especially Diane Robin. Robin is terrific in this movie. There are thrills, including the cheap ones, galore in this movie. Sometimes a Lifetime movie feels rushed towards the end. This one didn't. The story develops in a very satisfying way. The story is different and very well told. "Deadly Mile High Club" is a top-notch movie, Lifetime or not.
