Architect (Rinal Mukhametov ) wakes up in a different world, familiar, different, incomplete, and surreal like a Dali painting. We soon find out, in case you ignored the title, he is in a deep coma. They live in a world of everyone's memories. The really bad aspect is that there are reapers who can kill you. These are brain dead people in a coma. And if you die in here, it is just like a cyber world science fiction film.
There is a backstory to the whole thing as we discover later.
I loved the graphics. Someone had a field day with a green screen and a computer program. The actors were rather dry with boring dialogue too reminiscent of science fiction. There are some metaphors as God is the architect of creation and maybe some Free Mason stuff. Now if I was going to live in a world of memories, I wouldn't be dressed in rags and living as if the apocalypse happened. Just saying. The idea is the same as zombie films and that is to go live on an island somewhere without reapers.
Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
Plot summary
After a colossal and mysterious accident a young talented architect comes back to his senses in a very odd world that only resembles the reality. This world is based on the memories of the ones who live in it - people who are currently finding themselves in a deep coma. Human memory is spotty, chaotic and unstable. The same is the COMA - odd collection of memories and recollections - cities, glaciers and rivers can all be found in one room. All the laws of physics can be broken. The architect must find out the exact laws and regulations of COMA as he fights for his life, meets the love of his life and keeps on looking for the exit to the real world which he will have to get acquainted with all over again after the experience of COMA.

Not sleepy
Not sure if this is based on a novel (it would make sense),but it does look fantastic! Visually speaking the movie isa definite A+++ (add more plusses if you feel the need to). Story wise it does have a few flaws and acting/character wise you may feel a few bumps along the road too. Having said that, the movie does work more than nicely.
You get thrown in right from the start, not knowing what is happening, like the main character, but you get it fairly quickly. If you are into Science Fiction, you will be into this. The movie gets a bit cliche towards the end and maybe even a bit predictable for some. Still enough to wrap your mind around too and nice to see this coming from Russia
Russian Inception.
'Coma' is Russia's answer to 'Inception' - to a certain extent. The interesting visuals certainly reminds one of 'Inception', and the world in 'Coma' reminded me of 'Dragon Hunters'.
We've seen many movies about people going to 'the other side', or what becomes of us when we die (think 'Dreams may come', for example),but I've never seen a film about what happens to people when they are comatose.
Architect Viktor wakes up to a world that can only be described as a nightmare. Trying to find out what's going on, he is faced with more questions than answers. The film is very difficult to understand at first, but everything does become clearer as the story unfolds. To fully understand the film, more than one viewing is recommended to spot what you might have missed.
A Film like this is bound to deliver numerous plot flaws, and actions will be questioned. Reality, dreams and the coma world also blurs, and there's some confusion as to what one can actually remember. Ultimately, though, this was an exciting, unique film with lots of action, intrigue and suspense. The Reapers were well designed, creepy creatures.
There's an interesting twist and reveal.
