"Borat" almost all over again

Having played a boorish Kazakh journalist in "Borat", Sacha Baron Cohen now plays a gay (and ultra-flamboyant) Austrian fashion journalist in "Brüno". As the title character, Baron Cohen goes for the jugular in every way, being as un-PC as possible. As in the previous outing, he does the movie documentary-style to get people's reactions, although this one doesn't opt for teenage boy humor as much. Director Larry Charles had recently done something similar with Bill Maher's documentary "Religulous", in which the comedian trashes organized religion. But with this one, Baron Cohen is not afraid to show the most extreme things imaginable, just to get people to reveal their true selves. I certainly liked it, although I don't know if you will. Just understand that the content is likely to blow your mind.

Brüno annoyed the hell out of me

Brüno (Sacha Baron Cohen) is the gay host of Austrian TV fashion show Funkyzeit. When he cause a ruckus on the catwalk, he becomes a pariah. He decides to go to L.A. in a search for fame with only his assistant's assistant Lutz.

I've never found the overt gay character that funny. Nathan Lane's shtick has always annoyed me more than hit me funny. This is ten times worst. There is a certain hit and miss quality about all comedy that is hard to explain. This one annoyed the heck out of me. There is just no joy in this character. I find no redeeming quality about him. It's not simply that I didn't laugh. I actively hated this selfish self-obsessed character. He is not just a nice clueless gay dude. He is actually mean spirited. A lot of the jokes are too desperate. The fact is most people would try to be nice to this idiot and he needs to go overboard to push people for reactions. Even then, the reaction isn't that funny.

Borat 2.0

The fact that I gave the movie 1 (out of 10 points) alone will decide if this comment was useful for you or not. I'll still explain, why I didn't like the movie (at all). And there are many factors that count into them, as you will see below. That doesn't mean, that I will try to convince you, how you should feel about the movie.

Brüno is a direct copy and not a continuation of Borat (don't let anybody tell you any different). And while it was (kinda) fun to watch Borat, because it had it's moments, Brüno fails in almost everything it tries. The few good moments are revealed in the trailer. Those are just minor things of course and we have seen quite a few movies, that are either remakes or have taken ideas from other movies, that have their best scenes in the trailer.

So let's try to forget the fact that Borat is just the gay twin brother of Borat, who tries to copy his every move. Let's try to see something positive ... the fact, that the movie could be socially critical. A movie that tries to show how homophobic our society still is. Well unfortunately it doesn't even try (the "camp scene" is one of the most ridiculous scene ever).

OK, so it just tries to be funny, there is nothing wrong with that, right? Actually there is. The movie tries to gross you out as much as possible. For some (quite a few) that works. But while I wasn't (and still am not) a fan of the Jackass thing, that seems to entertain quite a few people ... and so does this movie. And some scenes could've been shot for Jackass, as far as I can tell.

Many people did laugh in the cinema, so the atmosphere when I watched this couldn't have been better ... if the movie could've hold up to that. Even in some really good moments (when he's in the middle East),it never really gets the humour out of it. And that's really a shame. I'm sure there was a reason why the director of Borat went on and made "Religulous" (with Bill Maher and really funny) instead of coming back and getting down with Brüno (no pun intended).

But if you like to laugh at other people getting humiliated and penetrated (in more than one way, physically and psychologically),then you will have fun. For everyone who wants something that has substance (and touches the homophobic issue far better than Brüno),watch "Religulous"!
