EVERYONE DESERVES A GOOD SCARE

This is the classic horror tale of kids wanting to spend time in an abandoned haunted mental institution...on Halloween...during a full moon. The film hits on the classic cliche scenes. I thought the beginning was "Scarey Movie." The best way to enter the hospital is from the funeral home. One kid is rigging the hospital to be scary for the other four. And there are other people looking for some missing girls they believe are in the hospital too.

I thought the film was fairly decent, a good effort that held my interest for about the first hour. After that it repeated too much of the same formula. The script needed some middle relief. Take heed. There are some plot spoiler reviews that tell you why the place is haunted. Good blood splatter. It is a story of what happens when you use an non-certified elevator, because they always stop on the haunted floor. Needs to be watched in the dark.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, minor sex scene, no nudity (Nicole Rayburn- bra)

Indie horror, not quite the worst

BOO is your typical indie horror flick set in an abandoned hospital. A bunch of unlikeable characters decide to visit and find out the place is haunted by sinister spirits from the past. Now, this is still a very bad film, completely clichéd throughout and lacking in interest, but it's better than a lot of indies I've watched recently. There's a cameo from Dee Wallace as a nurse, the film's quite well shot, and the script's a little perkier than normal.

A cut above

I hate using back-handed, "well it's better than the worst" compliments but, having seen my share of low budget horror movies of late, I must say that Boo! is certainly a cut above most of them.

It's well shot, creating an atmospheric and eerie feeling not generally found in the genre today. The effects are well done. The plot itself is solid and there are some clever laugh out loud moments.

On the downside, the pace drags at times and some of the dialog is weak in spots but not too much to be distracting. Also, there are a couple horror movie, "why the Hell are they doing that?" logic issues.

The biggest distraction came with some of the casting. Most of the actors are capable although not great, but I felt one of the main characters was weak. On the plus side, the villain is terrific. (Sorry about mixing my tenses)

Horror movies are a crap-shoot, usually more crap than anything else. But if you're looking for something better than most, I would recommend Boo! It's performance will make me keep an eye out for other Graveyard Filmworks productions.
